Lions Safety Issues Key Advice to Justin Fields & Gets Emotional About Ex-DC

Even though he is not the most vocal person, he is active with his body language, he is active with his 1-on-1 conversations,” said NY Jets HC Aaron Glenn while praising his QB Justin Fields during an interview with Harrison Glaser. That’s right as well. Last year, Fields proved himself at the Steelers by taking his team to a 4-2 win-loss record in the first 6 games. However, he did not get chances when Russell Wilson returned to full fitness. This year, Gang Green is cheering for the QB-HC to break the playoff curse haunting them since 2010.

Amid all the developments happening around the league, Lions safety Kerby Joseph sat down for an interview on the May 14 episode of the Rich Eisen Show. He gave advice to Justin Fields that could help him understand the psyche of his head coach. It’s all about teamwork and getting along well with the coaches and teammates.

The Lions’ safety said, “A great thing about him is that he (Aaron Glenn) understands players and knows how to teach them. He always says, ‘Why did you do that?’ And when I’m asking this, I’m not asking to get on your case. I want to understand why you did that so I can help you.” That’s what Justin Fields needs to understand and discuss his plays with Aaron Glenn. It will help them understand each other’s mindsets and move forward in pursuit of a common goal.

Moreover, it will also help the NY Jets’ HC assign different roles to players on the field. They failed last year when Aaron Rodgers failed to lift the spirits of his teammates. They have met each other at the right time. Aaron Glenn is having his first year as a head coach, while Fields is still finding a permanent spot as a starter.

Kerby Joseph explained how he got better and added, “That’s really how I ended up getting better—understanding what he was trying to teach me, understanding the play calls, understanding the defense.” It depends on how they move forward into the offseason. The schedules are out. But the memories of their former defensive coordinator are still fresh.

Kerby Joseph still misses Aaron Glenn

After his first year as the Lions’ DC, Aaron Glenn needed more players. He drafted the Illinois rookie in the 3rd round (75th overall). After learning the basic things in his first year, their ascension to the dangerous teams in 2023 and 2024 was exemplary. They have finished on top of the NFC North division in consecutive years.

When Rich Eisen started talking about DC, Joseph made a face. When pressed about his act, he replied, “I miss you, dog. I miss you, coach. Man, I miss you.” Aaron Glenn earned his place and respect in the hearts of his players. He gave them enough chances to make mistakes, was strict when needed, lifted them when they were down, and felt proud when they outperformed everyone.

The Lions have adopted a similar strategy by promoting LB coach Kelvin Sheppard to the defensive coordinator. Glenn is also working on his plans for the New York franchise. Yet, the memories remain. It’s hard to remove them. The respect still remains.
