“Country roads, take me home, to the place, I belong.” We bet there’s hardly anyone who might not have heard this song. A classic song that has been around for 54 years, courtesy of Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert, and John Denver, this masterpiece of the American music industry has made global waves. So it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the very iconic song getting vibed by a revered soccer team like Chelsea. But when Naomi Girma saw her teammates vibing on this song, she posed a unique question.
Well, in her defense, it was started by her own teammates. For context, it all began after the Blues clinched the FA Women’s Cup on Sunday, defeating WSL rivals Manchester United 3-0 in front of 70,000 fans at Wembley Stadium. Interestingly, celebrations had to extend beyond just lifting the silverware in front of their supporters, as the post-trophy shenanigans saw Chelsea stars have their own private extravaganzas inside the locker room.
A viral clip showcased all the players were seen doing their traditional dancing on the “Country Roads” song around the trophy. Even Girma was visibly involved in the merrymakings. That only saw ardent Chelsea fan and journalist Ishan Shah ask the USWNT defender about how she felt on doing celebrations. Hearing the ask, Naomi laughed as she stood alongside teammate Lucy Bronze as both couldn’t seem to control their hilarious expression.
Girma said, “Someone actually asked me if I’ve heard that song and I was like ‘You know that’s a remix right?’”
