“It rocked us all this morning when we found out,” said Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel as per The Canadian Press’ Gregory Strong. The Jets ‘ Western Round 2 series hangs in the balance as Dallas still has the upper hand with their 3-2 lead, despite the Jets winning Game 5. So, at a time when Mark Scheifele wanted his sole focus to be the game that might just become their last at this year’s playoffs, the Jets’ star got the worst news of his life.
“Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff told reporters a few minutes ago that Mark Scheifele’s father, Brad, passed away during the night,” NHL insider Elliotte Friedman posted just hours ahead of Game 6 in Dallas. Yet, despite this devastating news, Scheifele won’t leave his team high and dry at such a crucial moment. Coach Arniel told the media that he would play. Later, FOX 4 News anchor Jeff Kolb confirmed it.
As the Winnipeg Jets players walked into the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Mark Scheifele walked alongside his teammates. Talk about dedication! At a time when many may have chosen to bow out, the Jets’ alternate captain knew he couldn’t let so many dreams die, even amid the pain of losing his father. Needless to say, the fans were in awe just as much as they were in shock. “Absolutely gutted for him,” commented one fan.
