Just when Celtics fans thought their season might be over, Luke Kornet stepped up in historic fashion.
In Boston’s must-win Game 5 against the Knicks, the 7-foot-2 center put on a defensive masterclass. Kornet recorded five blocks in the third quarter alone, becoming just the fourth center in NBA history to tally that many in a single playoff quarter without starting the game. It’s also the most blocks ever recorded by a bench player in one playoff quarter, cementing his place in NBA history.
Kornet wasn’t just swatting shots either. He went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field through three quarters, adding 8 points and 8 rebounds to his stat line. His momentum-changing denial of OG Anunoby’s dunk attempt got the TD Garden crowd roaring and flipped the game’s energy.
With Jayson Tatum sidelined due to a torn Achilles, Kornet and Derrick White (32 points through three quarters) have become unlikely heroes for the Celtics. They helped Boston build a commanding 20-point second-half lead and kept the dream alive for a Game 6.
Down 3–1 in the series, the Celtics are fighting hard, and Kornet’s breakout game has them believing.
(This is a building story…)
