It’s been almost 3 months since the 2025 offseason kicked off when Aaron Rodgers entered free agency for the first time in his 20-year NFL career. At first, multiple franchises showed interest in signing the 4-time NFL MVP. Giants and Vikings all inquired about the availability of the future Hall of Famer. However, none were as enthusiastic as the Steelers. They were so bullish on a 41-year-old Rodgers that they even shuffled their whole QB room. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields signed for their respective New York franchises. Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson came in. Meanwhile, the Steelers are stuck with Rodgers, who remains noncommittal.
The Steelers may continue to believe that Rodgers will eventually sign for them. But honestly, there’s no guarantee of him doing so. Like, we are almost midway through May, weeks away from training camp. However, Rodgers is still far away from showing up in Pittsburgh. Of course, he had already met the Steelers’ front office. With their president, Art Rooney II, persisting, they may get word soon from him. But day after day, week after week, month after month, have flown by. As for Rodgers, he seems to be somewhere in Malibu still contemplating between retirement and the Steelers.
That’s why NFL Network analyst
Gregg Rosenthal feels the Steelers just haven’t dealt with this Rodgers saga the right way. Rodgers’ commitment issues have put them in a compromising position where they don’t really have any leverage.
“The Steelers have mismanaged this situation worse than any NFL team could. Can you imagine if a different team other than the Steelers was just waiting on bated breath for Aaron Rodgers, and he actually doesn’t go there? Like they should absolutely be flamed,” Rosenthal said on The Ross Tucker Podcast.
Over a month has flown by since Rodgers dropped a surprise appearance in Steel City. He later went on The Pat McAfee Show and talked about how the Steelers didn’t give him a deadline to sign. This prompted him to continue mulling over retirement or the Steelers. A few weeks later, the draft arrived. With lots of questions surrounding whether or not the Steelers would like to take a rookie QB, they chose Ohio State’s Will Howard.
But since the draft, two more weeks have passed. As for the Rodgers situation,
it’s stuck in neutral. No one really knows what’s going on in Rodgers’ mind. Whatever it could be, the Steelers’ 2025 season depends on it. While the Steelers remain hopeful in their pursuit to sign Rodgers, a former Super Bowl Champion WR gave his hot take on this Rodgers saga.
Aaron Rodgers to the Steelers confirmed via legendary receiver
There hasn’t been a single day this offseason when Rodgers wasn’t linked to the Steelers. But in most instances, you would expect both parties to come to a resolution. However, not in the case of Rodgers and the Steelers. While the latter remains optimistic in landing the veteran QB, their target is nowhere to be seen. With the Steelers’ 2025 season hanging in the balance without a proper field general, KeyShawn Johnson gave some respite to the Steelers.
“He’s going 100%. Do you think that Aaron Rodgers wants to hold them hostage and then leave them standing at the alter? I don’t,” Johnson said on Speak. He doesn’t seem to envision Rodgers ditching the Steelers at the very last moment. Johnson feels Rodgers “will be at OTAs” which starts on May 27th. So, Rodgers has basically 15 days to make Johnson’s prediction come true. If not, things could get ugly for the Steelers. Not having any experienced QB with a winning mentality could hurt the Steelers’ 2025 season from the very beginning.
The more the Steelers wait for Rodgers, the harder it will be for them to integrate him into their offense. Remember, this ain’t Green Bay or New York, where Rodgers can play with familiar faces. In Pittsburgh, things could be considerably harder for the 41-year-old to grasp at the get-go. That’s why the sooner he commits, the easier it will be for the Steelers to plan their next move.
