Watch: Dodgers Hyeseong Kim & D-Backs Star Steal the Show With Hilarious Interaction as Rivalry Takes Step Back

4 min read

Amid a season filled with controversial calls, fan interference, and no shortage of off-field drama, the 2025 MLB campaign has often felt more like a soap opera than a sporting showcase. But now and then, the game offers a moment of relief, a reminder of the human side of baseball. That much-needed dose of light-heartedness came on Mother’s Day, when the Dodgers infielder Hye-Seong Kim and the Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo shared a playful exchange mid-game. This offered fans a refreshing moment of fun and banter amid the intensity of competition.

The incident occurred at the top of the sixth inning during yesterday’s Dodgers-Diamondbacks game. With one out and a runner on first, Kim faced Zac Gallen for the third time that game. Gallen, having trouble with his curveball all afternoon, left a 79.5 mph knuckle curve over the plate. There Kim took advantage, sending the pitch into right-center field. You know Kim’s trademark speed. With that, he dashed toward second base.

But drama starts here! The play was tight, with Perdomo making a quick tag. But the umpire initially called Kim safe. It looked like he had secured his first career double. The Diamondbacks requested a video review.

After a brief delay, the call was overturned. While replays seemed to show Kim’s foot touching the bag just ahead of the tag, the review crew saw it differently. Kim could only shake his head in disbelief as he returned to the dugout, his milestone moment slipping away. During his review, both players were seen involved in a lighthearted banter with the Dodgers’ slugger showing something to Perdomo.

Well, this is nothing important from the game POV, but a highlighted moment about how it feels to see two rival players sharing a good time. That’s why we call baseball a gentleman’s game.

At the end of the day, Kim made the last laugh because the Dodgers got the better of the D-Backs.

What was shaping up to be another thrilling finale turned into an unceremonious 8-1 loss for Arizona. The Diamondbacks, who had shown plenty of grit in the previous contests, found themselves outmatched by a sharp Dodgers squad that left no room for error. The game was a stark contrast to the previous high-energy showdowns. But the final score provided little more than a quiet conclusion to what had otherwise been a spirited series.

The Dodgers are doing what they are supposed to do

Well, after the initial hiccup, the Dodgers are currently going how they were expected to go before the season kicked in. They have been in strong form, winning 11 of their last 15 games. Yesterday, they secured an 8–1 victory against the Diamondbacks, splitting their four-game series. For starters, Freddie Freeman led the offense with four hits, including a home run and two doubles, while Tony Gonsolin pitched five scoreless innings to improve to 2–0 on the season.

Earlier in the week, the Dodgers dominated the Marlins 10–1, fueled by a six-run seventh inning and a three-run homer from James Outman in the ninth. Shohei Ohtani ignited the offense with a 107-mph triple in the sixth inning. So, it shows an all-around performance coming from the team. Remember the slump of Ohtani just a few days ago? Those are all gone now with Ohtani hitting at a .308 BA currently.

Apart from all this, perhaps the most inspiring story came from a rookie. Bobby Miller‘s electric stuff has taken the league by storm. His composure on the mound was a testament to the Dodgers’ ability to cultivate young talent and keep the pipeline flowing. Hence, the Dodgers are now an example of the perfect accumulation of veterans and rookies, steamrolling the rivals.
