It’s been a rough patch for the Colorado Rockies at the moment, and it’s been going on for quite some time. Their 21-0 loss against the San Diego Padres at Coors Field, tied with the Orioles, was the worst 39-game start in the history of MLB. And in baseball this kind of weird thing happens—sometimes the team scoring good runs struggles to hit the next day. And the same happened with the Rockies as they suffered their eighth straight defeat ahead of the road trip. And now, the buzz is all about the Rockies announcing open tryouts after their humiliating loss.
A viral tweet on X has left the fans wondering whether the Rockies are actually open to tryouts or not. Manager Bud Black, though, praised the resilience and character shown by the team, despite 63 runs in the five games with the worst ERA (5.89) in MLB. But it cannot be denied that Sunday’s game was less about the standings and more about confidence for the Rockies, who scored only 124 runs the entire year. So, is the news true?
The post on X, by Talkin Basabell, read, ” The Colorado Rockies have announced they will be holding open tryouts following their blowout loss to the Padres, per @Rockies.” It also highlights the worst-ever shutout loss for the Rockies and their standing in the National League West, 7-33. The post further presents the need for someone who can throw a baseball at least 45 mph, is not afraid of the Coors Field attitude, is emotionally prepared to experience the back-to-back losses, and is also familiar with the basic rules of baseball. The funnier part was that it could be anyone—a manager, a center fielder, a shortstop, or even a mascot—slated to be held on May 15 at Coors Field.

But that doesn’t seem at all true, as it looked like. Why is it so?
Well, if we look closer, we can identify the differences. First of all, it’s a parody account, and the poster has been edited. Although a few facts are correct, like the Colorado Rockies‘ 21-0 loss and the ranking should be 7-33, most of it is intended to take a funny dig at the franchise. Basically, with every game, the Rockies seem to be getting worse, and not to forget that the team has parted ways with their manager, too. Even their bench coach, Mike Redmond, was fired.
Dick Monfort, the chairman and CEO of the Rockies, deemed this performance “unacceptable”. He was found saying, “Our fans deserve better, and we are capable of better. While we all share responsibility in how this season has played out, these changes are necessary. We will use the remainder of 2025 to improve where we can on the field and to evaluate all areas of our operation so we can properly turn the page into the next chapter of Rockies Baseball.”
With the worst start to the season, the Rockies, at the moment, can only hope to find their way back to winning as soon as possible. But fans are unhappy not just with their performance but also with their manager’s firing.
Fans unhappy with Rockies manager’s firing over brutal season start
Now at 7-33, the Rockies have endured the worst start to the 2025 season. And if we can go back, we can find the Cincinnati Reds from 1876 and the Kansas City Cowboys from 1884, who had such similar bad records in those seasons. While the Rockies succumbed to the loss against the Padres at Coors Field, one thing that enraged the fans was the sudden firing of their manager, Bud Black. The organization has announced Warren Schaeffer as the interim manager, assuming the leadership shift may bring some positive outcomes for the team.
Honestly no one could fix this team. This is an organizational issue, not a managerial issue.

But that’s certainly not the only reason behind the losses, as one of the X users commented, “Honestly, no one could fix the team. This is an organizational issue, not a managerial issue.” It’s basically the owners of the team, who haven’t cared much about the team. A lack of clutch players and failing to deliver at the right moments have exposed Colorado’s thin bullpen, which requires a major improvement.
Another fan wrote, “Bud wasn’t the problem.” Bud Black went 544-689 across the nine seasons in the purple pinstripes. He is also the seventh manager who has managed to lead the Rockies to consecutive playoff appearances in 2017 and 2018. On the other hand, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also voiced his frustration over the decision to part ways with Black, someone whom he adored and considered a great mentor. He said, “I’m bummed. I’m disappointed. I don’t think Casey Stengel could change the outcome of that ball club, and that’s not the manager’s fault.”
Well, what’s done is already done. We can all only hope that the managerial shift brings some positives for the team. However, do you think firing the manager was a good call made by the Rockies?
