The Cleveland Cavaliers found themselves the subject of online ridicule and serious concern on Sunday night after an embarrassing first-half performance against the Indiana Pacers in Game 4. By halftime, the Pacers were up 80-39, leading many fans and analysts to jokingly suggest Cleveland should just forfeit the rest of the game.
The Pacers’ offense was nearly flawless, shooting 60% from the field and knocking down 12 of 18 shots from deep. Meanwhile, Cleveland struggled mightily, going just 8-of-32 overall and managing a mere 25% shooting clip. Donovan Mitchell led the Cavs with 12 points, but it was clear that Indiana’s momentum had completely overwhelmed the visitors.
A heated moment between De’Andre Hunter and Bennedict Mathurin added to the chaos early in the first quarter. After Mathurin appeared to strike Hunter in the midsection, Hunter responded by shoving him to the ground, leading to a Flagrant II on Mathurin and technicals on Hunter and Myles Turner.
Despite entering the night down 2-1 in the series, the Cavaliers looked entirely unprepared for Indiana’s energy. With the Pacers looking like one of the most dominant teams left in the playoffs, some wondered if Cleveland’s best move was simply not to return for the second half.
