Mets’ Steve Cohen Asked to Buy $7.5B NBA Team After Courtside Knicks Game Appearance With Wife Alex

4 min read

A courtside seat at Madison Square Garden is where Steve Cohen, the 94th wealthiest person in the world, was called out to buy an NBA team worth $7.5 billion – The Knicks. Cohen casually made an appearance at the Knicks-Celtics game 3 with his wife, Alex Cohen. Sure, the owner of the New York Mets being spotted at an NBA game did amuse the New Yorkers, but it’s something else that has the fans buzzing.

That ‘something‘ is a stunning idea implied by the attendees. The idea is simple: What if the man behind one of the MLB’s most financially ambitious teams buys an NBA team? Sounds shocking? Well, honestly, it is.

Steve Cohen became the official owner of the Mets back in November 2020. He acquired the team for a whopping $2.4 billion. You see, Cohen currently owns 97% of the Mets and he is well known for his massive wealth and willingness to invest in sports franchises. Not to forget, he is one of the richest owners in the major league baseball.

He has the capacity, status and ambition to consider the idea of investing in the Knicks. It was speculated that his interests lay outside of MLB as well. It’s not that far-fetched. He has a great impact on the Mets that has made the team reach its prime in major league baseball.

And well, wouldn’t he love to have a broader influence in New York sports? Fans love this idea already. They have already manifested Cohen owning the Knicks. With Mets, he doesn’t hold back investing heavily.

Just this off-season, he acquired Juan Soto for a massive $765 million. So, if he decides to materialize this idea, it’s a win-win for both Cohen and the Knicks. Apparently, the fans aren’t a fan of the Knicks’ recent outings. They want to believe that Cohen’s ownership can bring the change.

Fans couldn’t hold back after Cohen made an appearance at the Knicks game

It blew up the internet when Cohen was spotted with Alex at Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the Knicks-Celtics series. The Knicks were brutally dominated by the Celtics’ 115-93 win. However, it’s Cohen’s presence that has taken over social media. Just one collective reaction echoed: STEVE, BUY THE KNICKS!

Well, the Knicks fans aren’t really happy with the team’s performance currently. They have just lost the third game to the Celtics; fans were evidently frustrated. They just had one plea to make to Cohen: “Please buy this team too, uncle Steve.” Under Cohen’s ownership, the Mets have been thriving in MLB. And in the NBA world, the Knicks fans are desperate for things to turn around.

True – it’s not every day that we see such crossovers. It was surprising to see Cohen at a Knicks game for both fanbases. “This is huge, guys. Never seen this kind of support from other team owners.” The Knicks are currently owned by James Dolan and Cohen has proved that he has some serious interests outside of baseball. It naturally occurred to the fans that Dolan and Cohen probably have good ties.

Just tell them a date already: “When is he gonna buy the Knicks? lol” Well, Cohen didn’t show up at the weekend just to chill; he is a man with a plan. Given his investment ambitions, it wouldn’t be surprising if he really bought the Knicks.

Cohen’s ownership approach indicates that he will be impactful beyond MLB as well. Given his wealth, some fans don’t even find it surprising that he will buy an NBA team. “I know he wanna buy the Knicks so bad lmao.” You see, his appearance was seen as a personal and strategic move. It might change the dynamics of the Knicks if Cohen considers materializing.

Alex and Steve certainly stood out with their presence: “The King and Queen of New York Sports!” Seated on the courtside in the best seats, the fans saw the passion Cohen has towards all the New York teams. The New Yorkers have shown immense trust in Cohen’s ownership. The way he has held the Mets since 2020, the NBA fans would love his guidance on the Knicks as well.

For now, the fans will be watching each of Cohen’s moves very closely. And Perhaps, Dolan’s too!
