Phil Mickelson’s Future at Stake as Rule Protecting His LIV Golf Spot to Be Revoked Under New CEO, Reports

For the three-time Masters winner, Phil Mickelson, the 2025 season has been nothing but a mixed bag. Ahead of the first men’s major of the season, the LIV golfer seemed plenty aware of his form and expectations of him. The 54-year-old said, “Any win is a huge accomplishment right now.” However, for the golfer, who is still seeking his first win since the 2021 PGA Championship, it better come fast. And the urgency comes in part due to the latest development at the Saudi-backed league. Here’s what’s happening at LIV Golf.

Remember LIV reaching in “advance talks” with the OWGR to secure rankings for its players? Looks like the end result is coming closer and closer, considering the latest news we have just received concerning the development. According to the latest news from Sports Illustrated Golf, the LIV Golf league is contemplating changes to improve its chances of receiving world ranking points for its players. One of the major changes?

The proposed change would require all players finishing in the ‘relegation zone’—the lowest performers in the league—to take part in a qualifying event. This rule would also apply to team captains, who typically do not participate in such events. The purpose of these changes is to improve the league’s reputation and status within professional golf. For Phil Mickelson, who currently ranks 15th in the LIV Golf standings, this serves as a major warning.
