Will Aaron Rodgers finally sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers? The question’s been hanging in the air like a deep ball with no receiver in sight. Rodgers has that kind of reputation, the guy who likes things just so. Like most have pointed out, Aaron likes to control things in the locker room. That was also reportedly the reason the Jets’ new HC Aaron Glenn said goodbye to Rodgers as soon as he arrived in New York.
It was no secret that Rodgers didn’t exactly vibe with the Jets’ WR room either. That was the reason, after a year of being on the team (despite not playing more than a single down), he brought in his longtime friend Davante Adams. Now here’s where it gets interesting: The Steelers, who are currently waiting for Rodgers to text them back, are trading away their receiver George Pickens. So, could this be a breadcrumb? Is Rodgers quietly eyeing the Steelers next? Enter Patriots legendary WR Julian Edelman. In conversation with Colin Cowherd on his show, Edelman feels that Rodgers might be waiting for an opportunity to join a team that needs a QB due to an injury. Or a team that might have issues with their current QB.
“Maybe he is just that much smarter where he’s probably going to land into, like, some team that gets a hurt quarterback that he likes,” said Edelman. The former WR then explored why Rodgers could not build chemistry with Jets WRs. That was because he missed mini-camps and off-season workouts. So, if he has struggled with that before, why would he delay it again? “You know, we saw his time with the Jets that he struggled with being on the same chemistry page with his receivers, which is developed through organized team activities, mini-camps, off-season, and you need those practices. So why is he doing it again?“
That’s how Aaron Rodgers has been; that’s the kind of reputation he has across the league. Pointing to that, Edelman feels that the veteran QB is waiting so that he can land in a situation where he wants to be. “Maybe he falls into something else he wants.” Well, as Rodgers’ situation continues to hang in the air, an interesting rumor has emerged following the George Pickens trade. A Jets WR is reportedly in the mix to fill Pickens’ spot in the Steelers’ WR room.
Aaron Rodgers’ Packers teammate to the Steelers?
The Steelers Nation was excited when the team’s brass got on board with DK Metcalf. The fans were eager to see DK and George Pickens together on the gridiron. But soon after Metcalf’s arrival, rumors started floating around that the Steelers might be trading Pickens. When GM Omar Khan was asked about it at the pre-draft conference, he shut those rumors down, saying, “No. I mean, we’re glad we have George and DK here. I think they’re gonna be exciting for everyone to watch. Excited to have DK here, but no.” Just two weeks after the draft, the team took a U-turn and sent their receiver to the Dallas Cowboys.
Now that Pickens is no longer here, the Steelers are reportedly eyeing someone to fill his spot. And the name that’s been floating around is Jets wideout Allen Lazard. The Jets WR is in the final year of his contract and could end up on the Steelers roster, if Rodgers lands there too. Lazard and Rodgers have played together both with the Packers as well as the Jets. As per Pro Football Talk, Lazard is “reportedly in play to be traded to Pittsburgh.”
But honestly, at this point in his career, Allen Lazard isn’t on the same level as Pickens. Still, he can get some touchdowns. And if Rodgers comes, there’s that upper hand since they’ve already played together. So, getting Allen Lazard on board might only be effective if Pittsburgh manages to bring Aaron Rodgers in first.
Pittsburgh now holds a solid handful of future draft picks, especially after trading away Pickens. With these assets in hand, they certainly have the means to make a deal. If both the Jets and Steelers agree, this trade could very well become a reality. So, could it be that we’ll see Aaron Rodgers and Allen Lazard in together in yet another uniform? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
