The Fatal Fury event on May 2nd in Times Square, New York, ended on a sour note for most fans. There was hope that Ryan Garcia would take down Rolando Romero and that Devin Haney would handle Jose Ramirez. The dream of a Haney-Garcia rematch took a hit after Garcia’s unanimous decision loss to Romero. Though Haney did handle Ramirez, Haney’s sleep-inducing performance against the former champion didn’t invoke any confidence in ‘The Dream’ either. While Ramirez played catch-up the full 12 rounds, Haney circled the ring, avoiding any exchanges. The fight was so bad that veteran boxing commentator Jim Lapley, from the booth, even remarked, “If ever there was a fight capable of inducing a nap in Times Square, it would be this one.” Still, Bill Haney is of the opinion that his son did enough.
Though the scorecards seem to back that up with judges scoring the fight decisively in Devin Haney’s favor: 119-109, 119-109, and 118-110, most boxing fans, including some veterans, believe the 26-year-old did more running than fighting that night. Despite this, riding high on the victory, Bill Haney is now claiming that Devin Haney had fought so well that he ended up sending Jose Ramirez straight for the ambulance. But that claim wasn’t allowed to slide as Ramirez’s coach and veteran trainer Robert Garcia soon jumped in to slam the father-son duo.
Robert Garcia claims it was all protocol
Two days after Devin Haney’s unanimous decision win, Bill Haney took to social media to reshare a screengrab of a FightHype clip that read, “Jose Ramirez was sent to Ambulance after losing to Devin Haney,” and another screenshot which read “Devin Haney laughs ringside watching Ryan Garcia lose.” He also stated, “Dan Rafael and Tim Bradley etc. said the fight was boring. But after 12 rounds with Devin Haney, Jose Ramírez ended up in the back of an ambulance while Devin sat ringside, laughing and ready for the next challenge. Hurt business ain’t rock ’em sock ’em. #WinOrLose” This claim prompted Robert Garcia to jump in without a reality check. “Every fighter did that. That’s where they checked every fighter post fight. Don’t start this nonsense. Congrats you guys won. No need for this BS,” the veteran trainer declared.

Now, let’s take a step back and think about this. Where exactly did this fight go down? Right in the heart of New York City, Times Square, at the iconic intersection of Broadway, Seventh Avenue, and 42nd Street. Unlike a typical arena, there were no locker rooms or proper post-fight facilities nearby. You see, when a fight happens in the middle of the street, there’s nowhere to patch up cuts or ice down bruises or even for the chief examining doctor to asses the fighter after the bout. And the entire process being moved to the back of an ambulance might just be protocol, not a sign of being hurt.
But it seems Bill Haney wasn’t done just yet—he had a bit more to say in his defense.
The mic’s always on for Devin Haney’s father
Just a few hours after Robert Garcia’s tweet made the rounds, Bill Haney responded with a short, dismissive reply: “We didn’t .” But Garcia wasn’t about to let it go. He fired back: “The way your son acts with the commission I bet you didn’t. Theres no locker rooms so everyone was told to get checked in the back of the ambulance. You think after that fight either of our fighters needed to go to the ambulance? Instead of posting this we should be apologizing.”

This was a clear rebuke against the Haneys for their reaction to the Ryan Garcia loss last year, and the subsequent suit they filed in light of Garcia’s positive drug tests. Regardless, until a dominant performance from Devin Haney, it seems, these criticisms are bound to well up.
However, now, in the wake of Ryan Garcia’s loss, the highly anticipated Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia rematch seems to have slipped away. Even though Rolando Romero insisted Garcia should face Devin Haney, as of now, the path forward feels uncertain.
So, where do things go from here? Will Devin Haney pivot toward a bout with Rolly Romero? Or could Ryan Garcia push for a rematch with Romero instead?
