The New York Yankees might have to make a move—and do it fast! Jazz Chisholm Jr. left Tuesday night’s game with what the team says is a “right flank discomfort.” He did try to power through with it and even doubled off Kyle Gibson. But then, minutes later, he was out and was replaced by Oswald Peraza.
With the updates, it seems to be an oblique issue. He is heading to an MRI, and even now, Jazz Chisholm, being himself, is making light of the situation, at least trying to. Mr. Smiles said, “I mean, it is in the flank – it really is in my flank. If you look at a cow, that’s their oblique, I guess. … I went and looked it up, and I was like, ‘Yeah, I can use that.”
But then, this is no laughing matter for the New York Yankees. And they might take action this time.
Chisholm has struggled all season, and even though he leads the American League in strikeouts, he is still batting just .181. The Yankees took a chance with him, and that is looking like a risky gamble now. Hence, now, the trade buzz has already started, at the center of which is Luis Arraez—the Padres’ $14 million man.
He isn’t just a solid hitter; he is a contact machine. Three straight batting titles are proof enough. This season, too, he is slashing at .289, with some extra base hits and RBIs. Not exactly like stellar slugger numbers, but he gets on base, and for Aaron Boone, that is gold for the lineup. Previously, the NY Yankees have shrugged off getting Arraez, but given things might change in the Bronx, this deal might get another look.
Right now, the only hang-up might be Luis Arraez’s defense. He is not a wizard with the glove, and the Yanks know it. But if the Bronx’s current second baseman can’t even stay healthy or be on the plate, it might be time to roll over to the next best.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. loses his cool, but MLB lets it slide
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is not only facing issues on the field; he even irked the league by letting his emotions get the best of him. So it all started on April 17, when the Yankees’ second baseman was rung up on a full count pitch that looked low, really low. John Bacon, the umpire, called it, and let’s just say Chisholm didn’t take it lightly.
Chisholm Jr. continued to argue, and so he was ejected. Not new for him; it was his fifth career ejection, but certainly a first wearing pinstripes. But then the fireworks didn’t stop here. He then, in the clubhouse, hopped into his socials and tweeted, “Not even f****** close!!!.” Now he knew it was a mistake and deleted it, but too late. The league noticed and hit him with a suspension.
It was not just for the tweet but also for speaking about the umpire, rather than questioning him and taking shots at him. But Chisholm appealed the decision, saying he wasn’t even at the game when he tweeted—that there was a gray area. Finally, on Sunday, MLB backed off and called off the suspension. But not the fine; that stayed. Nevertheless, lesson learned, and Jazz also knows he had gone too far. “I lost my emotions. I lost my cool. I have to be better than that.”
Fans were thrilled that they kept the second baseman on the field without any big consequences. But well, as fate would have it, he is still sitting it out. So, do you think that the Yankees would go ahead and trade him this time around? Let us know in the comments your thoughts.
