Life can change in an instant. One moment, you’re on top of the world. Next, you’re facing heartbreak. Sadly, that’s the reality right now for the former NC State guard Saniya Rivers. Just a few weeks ago, she was celebrating a dream come true–getting drafted 8th overall by the Connecticut Sun. But now, she’s dealing with something no one ever wants to face–the loss of her mother. A heartbreaking turn for a young star who had the world at her feet.

Saniya Rivers shared the heartbreaking news on her Instagram story this afternoon. “I have no words for how I feel right now, I love you so much mom,” Rivers wrote. “May you rest in peace.”

As expected, tributes began pouring in from all corners. The basketball world rallied around Saniya Rivers during her time of grief. WNBA legend and 3x MVP Sheryl Swoopes took to X to share her condolences. “Sending prayers to Saniya Rivers. May God wrap his arms around you and give you strength and comfort during this difficult time. So sorry for your loss. ”
