2 NFL Franchises Look Beyond NFL Draft for Canadian QB as 32 Teams Pass on Taylor Elgersma

“Have you ever felt like you were the only one on the road? You ever wondered where everybody has gone? You ever felt abandoned? Have you ever felt alone?” These lines were written by Jayesslee for her song, released in 2012, which perfectly fits the Canadian rookie quarterback we are talking about. The QB went undrafted in the 2025 NFL draft when he was on his toes for three days.

The wait is over for the Canadian QB, Taylor Elgersma. Elgersma, who made history by becoming the first Canadian university QB to be invited and play in the Senior Bowl, went undrafted after the 2025 NFL draft. But he doesn’t have to worry about that, as two NFL teams are showing interest in him.

According to latest update by the NFL reporter, Tim Pelissero, “Former Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks QB Taylor Elgersma — who had only played Canadian football until getting invited to all-star games, including the Senior Bowl — is slated to attend the #Packers and #Bills rookie minicamps the next two weeks, per source.” Yes, the Bills and Packers have invited him to the mini-camp for rookies.

As the former Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks went undrafted, he is now an undrafted free agent and can sign with any team at any point. That’s why the Packers and Bills are examining Taylor Elgersma, maybe as a backup QB.

To take a look at his capabilities, according to his stats from the Golden Hawks’ official website, in 2024, Taylor has played 13 games. He made 34 touchdowns while completing 275 out of a total of 374 passes at a 73.52% completion rate. He has passed for over 4011 yards. That is really impressive. It should make us think why no team drafted Taylor Elgersma.

Most terrifying three days in Taylor Elgersma’s life

Imagine pouring your heart and soul into the game during your college days, driven by the dream that one day you’d hear your name called in the NFL Draft. But when those three days finally arrive, the excitement slowly fades into a quiet, lingering nightmare. The phone never rings. The dream stalls.

The harsh reality is that very few college prospects from Canadian universities ever get the chance to hear their name called during the seven-round NFL Draft.

A seven-round NFL Draft selection of Taylor Elgersma would have made him the first Canadian drafted since 2001. That year, the New York Giants selected Canadian quarterback Jesse Palmer. Although the 49ers passed on Elgersma, they did draft another Canadian, Kurtis Rourke.

Now, both the Packers and the Bills have extended invitations to Elgersma. The Bills already feature three Canadian players — Dalton Kincaid, Taylor Rapp, and Eli Ankouall of whom have played in the NFL postseason.

Could Taylor Elgersma become the fourth Canadian on the Bills’ roster? It’s a long shot, as it often is for Canadian prospects, but Elgersma’s name is starting to create some quiet buzz. Could he be the next underdog story in Buffalo?
