After falling short against Jannik Sinner in the 2024 Cincinnati Open final, Frances Tiafoe remained determined, admitting, “I’ve been in Top 20 for a couple years now. And now I can just kind of keep going and keep pushing and try to get back to where I need to be in the top of the game,” Even after a challenging US Open semifinal defeat to Taylor Fritz, where he admitted his body “just shut down,” the American continues to compete fiercely, striving to rediscover his peak form in 2025. However, navigating these setbacks inevitably takes a mental toll. How does Tiafoe manage these difficult periods?

Frances Tiafoe’s European clay-court swing hasn’t started smoothly, with early exits in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona following tough losses to Alexei Popyrin and Jaume Munar, respectively. Although he advanced to the second round in Madrid after Luciano Darderi retired, his dip in form has certainly challenged him! Yet, through it all, Tiafoe’s inner circle remains firmly by his side.

On Sunday, ahead of his second round encounter in Madrid, the American appeared on “The Change Over Podcast” and gave an elaborated list of all those who help him when adversity hits hard in his professional life. “Honestly, like when I’m really like in a tough, tough spot,” Tiafoe began explaining. “I’m like bro, you just build for this. I like it’s never been easy for you. You came from that. You started from the mud. Like this is so you know what you losing a couple of matches, in the nicest cities in the world. Like get over yourself. You’re not that important.”

So like the perspective, you gotta really go there and then you kind of start building it back up because I’m like when I’m playing college park and I didn’t know I was gonna play didn’t know what racket, that was tough. This is really not that big of a deal. Tough moments didn’t last forever. But tough people do….” But “there’s times where I am definitely times where like man I am done with this, I’m over this.” It is then he turns to the “solid group around” him.

“You gotta turn turn the page and having good people around you as well, I have been like she (Ayan Broomfield) has been amazing. I mean, she’s been with me for so long, ten years. This US open, so I’m always kinda vent for her. She’s always going to be there through all those ups and downs.” Broomfield isn’t the only one.

“Twin brother, parents you know, they love me, no matter what. So you know, they are great. I got all my boys back home that I grew up with playing tennis with. I am still super close friends with cousins and stuff. I have people outside the game where I just go and being nice speak about tennis and they just want to make sure that individual Frances Tiafoe is good….I got a solid group around me…it gives you space to just compete because like I’m top of the world.”

While Tiafoe leans on his inner circle for strength, he now gears up to face France’s Alexandre Müller for a spot in the Madrid Open R16. Meanwhile, miles away, long-distance blues hit hard as his beloved Ayan Broomfield turns up the heat under the Californian desert sun.

Frances Tiafoe sends a heartfelt message to Ayan Broomfield from Madrid

Long-distance relationships are tough, and Frances Tiafoe knows it better than most. As he gears up for his Madrid Open R32 match, Tiafoe couldn’t help but show how much he misses his girlfriend, influencer, Ayan Broomfield. It’s a familiar scene for Big Foe, who often leaves heartfelt comments whenever Broomfield’s glamorous travels takes him away.

Recently, Broomfield shared a carousel of stunning pictures from her trip to Palm Springs, California, where she attended the grand opening of Jacquemus’ new LA store. No stranger to Jacquemus’ style, she previously wowed in a sheer black dress and matching blazer at the ‘Vogue World’ event in Paris, earning a proud comment from Tiafoe: “Yea that fit was the one for sure #statementpiece.”

In her latest post, Broomfield showcased a series of outfits, from chic swimwear to stylish dresses, captioning it, “casually living my Pinterest board,” True to form, Tiafoe was quick to react, writing simply but sweetly, “Miss you bb,” while admiring her stunning looks from afar.

As Ayan lights up California with her style, Tiafoe is determined to make his mark on the red clay of Madrid. A strong run, maybe even a trophy, would be the perfect confidence booster heading into Roland-Garros, and perhaps, a fitting gift for the one he’s missing so dearly. Isn’t it?
