Matt LaFleur’s Draft Pick Shares Heartbreaking Struggles of 2-YO Daughter With a Clear Message to Packers

5 min read

This year’s draft isn’t just about excitement, it’s about heart. From Cam Ward’s emotional reaction after being selected as the 1st overall pick, to Shedeur Sanders’ message on faith as his draft stock tanks. From Will Campbell barely stopping his tears on camera to Emeka Egbuka’s voice breaking when he got the call. The players and the fans have already experienced a rollercoaster ride of emotions. And now, Matt LaFleur’s latest receiver addition, Savion Williams, has a story that hits us right in the feels.

This guy isn’t just a receiver. Comparing him with the likes of Cordarrelle Patterson, Savion Williams is a receiver and a runner. According to Mike Renner, he’s “A unique chess piece to put into Matt LaFleur’s offense.” Williams has the words “to whom much is given much is expected” tattooed on his left arm. So, he’s clearly not messing around, and he’s ready to show his talents on the gridiron now. But if you ever wondered what drives him to explosive plays, it’s his family. Most importantly, it’s his baby daughter.

Savion Williams opened up to ESPN Originals about his daughter’s health conditions per their recent Instagram post. The post features pictures of Williams and his daughter Legacy, and also a short video of Williams talking about their journey and struggles. In the clip, Williams shared, “My daughter’s name is Legacy. She was like two months premature. My wife’s name is Jordan. I think she was like 32 weeks with her, and felt like something was off with the baby. The hospital ended up admitting her. We found out our daughter had a heart defect. We started crying, and you know we prayed we’re just gonna have to face it and be strong.” The video also goes on to tell us that Legacy had to get surgery when she was just three months old.

Legacy Williams was born with an AV canal defect. She is in the 1% of babies worldwide to have this defect without having Down syndrome, as per Savion’s Instagram. In the ESPN clip, Savion further shares, “Seeing her go through all that being so small makes me wanna just go even harder like words can’t even explain. Legacy, Jordan, I love y’all, and everything I do is for y’all.” Savion Williams has always been open about what inspires him. “On the field, (Legacy) helps me a lot, because if something doesn’t go my way, and I think about getting down on myself, I can think about my daughter.” Legacy is about to be 2 years old on 2nd May this year. She is the one for whom he gives a 100% on the field. And with this drive, he’s ready to become an undeniable asset to the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers find their missing chess piece in Savion Williams

Savion Williams is a force to be reckoned with. Simply put, he adds depth, complexity, and unpredictability to the Packers’ roster. Along with Matthew Golden and Anthony Belton as new additions, the Packers mean business, and they’re letting the world know they’re in this game to win. Perhaps Savion is the piece that gets them the Super Bowl. Mike Renner had this to say while grading Williams, “For this Green Bay Packers offense, he’s not going to be like a one, a two, or a three. He’s going to be a guy that when he’s in, he’s taking jet sweeps. He’s taking handoffs out of the back field. You’re throwing him screens or throwing him deep balls because he has 4.48 speed as well and can really get down the football field.”

And Mike’s not the only one who understands his potential. NFL Analyst Lance Zierlein has said Savion Williams is a “Developmental wideout who offers an alluring blend of physical gifts and untapped potential. Williams is big, strong, and fast, but very raw as a route-runner and is unreliable with his hands. His production is uneven as a traditional wideout, but he adds a dynamic kick to the offense as a gadget runner and as a catch-and-run option.” Savion Williams is a 6’3″, 222-pound running machine with a 4.48 speed. He has the numbers backing him up, too. In his five seasons of college football, this guy caught a massive 127 passes for 1,665 yards. Add to that 14 TDs, and we’re cooking with a hot stove.

With the drive of his family fueling him forward, fans are certain he’s going to be a monumental addition to the Packers’ offense. And he’s happy to be a Packer, too. He recently shared an Instagram story of his daughter, all cute and decked up in Packers’ green with the words NFL Draft written on her dress. That drive we spoke about? It shows. Our hearts go out to Legacy and Savion’s struggle. We tip our hats and wait for his journey in the big leagues to unfold.
