Andy Reid Gives Up Key Asset to Address Major Issues as Chiefs GM Clears Agenda for Patrick Mahomes

3 min read

The Chiefs have the same good old strategy for any draft: see the shortcomings and work on them. And the HC Andy Reid doesn’t have to look far back—they always assess their roster based on the Super Bowl. If QB Patrick Mahomes lifted the trophy, then the GM Brett Veach could experiment. Otherwise, they have to seek reinforcements from the draft and bring in raw players.

That’s their game plan this year as well. Last time they lost the Super Bowl before the Eagles defeat, it was against the Buccaneers in the 2021 season; afterward, the franchise drafted Washington CB Trent McDuffie. This year, the offensive linemen are a priority for Andy Reid. And he is willing to jump places.

NFL Draft analyst Chad Reuter released the draft picks for 2025, which threw a few surprises for the Chiefs. He predicted that the AFC West franchise would swap the first (31st overall) and 2nd round picks (63rd overall) with the Ravens, who have first round (27th) and second round (59th). Additionally, they will also give away their 3rd round pick (95th overall) to the AFC North team.

However, Andy Reid will still get a chance to choose a player in the 3rd round, which they received while trading the cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Titans last year. While the drama goes on about the draft, the Chiefs aim for the Minnesota OT Aireontae Ersery. The 6-foot-6, 331 lbs is a beast on the gridiron.

After taking care of the offense in the first round, Andy Reid is projected to look for defensive options in the second round. They are interested in the 6-foot-7, 280 lbs DE Landon Jackson for the coming season. In 3 years for Arkansas, he recorded 5 defended passes, 2 forced fumbles, 16 sacks, and 116 tackles (59 solo). The game is on!

However, these are just mock draft picks. The Chiefs’ GM has a different plan in mind. He has the quarterback at the center of their strategy.

Chiefs GM sets new plan for Andy Reid

Back in 2021, during Super Bowl LVI, the Chiefs lost 31-9. The GM Brett Veach said, “I’m never going to let that happen again.” He did what he said and brought 2 Super Bowls to the franchise. But they lost to the Eagles this year. Fans could not forget the sad visuals of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce from the sidelines.

This has forced the GM to set new plans for the quarterback in the coming draft. It will help Andy Reid as well in the O-line. “We always want to surround Pat with playmakers. The more talent at wideout you can throw on the field at one time is something important to us,” Veach said while talking about the draft plans.

It’s a brilliant plan. Their plan of keeping playmakers helped them last year as well. While they lost WRs like Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown and Rashee Rice to injuries, rookie Xavier Worthy rose to the occasion. In his rookie year, the WR had 59 receptions for 638 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns. He also showed a good rushing game with 20 rushes for 104 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The draft is starting on the same note for the franchise. Andy Reid & Brett Veach are looking for RBs. Will they get one? Stay tuned for more news about your favorite NFL teams.
