Scottie Scheffler doesn’t toss around the word “easy” lightly. Coming off a nerve-wracking win at the Masters, the world No. 1 returned to action Thursday at the RBC Heritage and opened with a round that felt—at least by comparison—a little more breathable.
“Did it feel easy? Easy would not be… I think definitely like a less stressful round,” Scheffler admitted. “I felt like if you compared my four rounds last week to today, today would be a much less stressful round of golf in terms of scrambling for a par. A lot of the stuff I had to do last week I felt like I didn’t have to do today to shoot a good score.”
The difference? Less scrambling. More fairways. And some buttery iron work. “The golf course is obviously a bit different, but I was in position most of the day today,” he shared. “I hit a lot of really iron shots. I got off to a good start. Overall, yeah, fairly I would say stress-free day.”
Still, Scheffler isn’t taking anything for granted—even at a course that offers a lighter vibe following the chaos of Augusta National. “I will never say that golf is easy, ever,” he said with a smile. “Golf is hard.”
That’s coming from a guy who has slipped on the green jacket nit once, but twice. If Harbour Town felt a little less punishing, it’s only because Augusta left bruises. Even for the best in the world, the grind never really stops.
