She’s phenomenal, both on and off the court.” Jo Mirza, the president of the AAU, expressed her admiration for Lexi Rodriguez as she etched her legacy into volleyball history by winning the 95th AAU James E. Sullivan Award. With star-studded competition like Cooper Flagg and Ashton Jeanty, Rodriguez rose with grit and grace, becoming the heartbeat of volleyball.

The Sullivan Award, celebrated as the “Oscar of amateur sports,” honors the top amateur athletes in the United States, and Rodriguez now joins an elite trio of volleyball legends. Her victory adds to her legacy and honors pioneering icons like Flo Hyman and Mikaela Foecke, helping to echo the voice of volleyball across the American sports landscape.

Before Rodriguez: The Sullivan legacy by Hyman & Foecke

Flo Hyman set the bar high before Lexi Rodriguez took center stage. She was an icon on and off the court; she won the Sullivan Award in 1983 and became a pioneer for volleyball athletes. She led the team USA to Olympic glory and also advocates for women’s rights in sports. Hyman’s impact was immense, and her legacy continues to resonate with every sports milestone achieved.

Years after Flo Hyman set the precedent, Mikaela Foecke, another formidable player from Nebraska, continued her legacy. Foecke earned two NCAA national championship titles and received the Sullivan Award in 2019. She clutched her performance with an unshakable mindset, where the team came first. She left a legacy through her exemplary spirit of leadership, skills, and athleticism.

Hyman and Foecke together built a lasting legacy that helped volleyball get recognition on the national stage, which it deserved. Both of them redefined the bar, where they recognize more than athletes, leading with purpose and inspiring others. Now, Rodriguez steps confidently into the rare lineage of greatness.
