As draft day approaches, the list of top quarterback prospects keeps shifting with every new mock draft. So far, the spotlight has mostly been on Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Ole Miss’s Jaxson Dart have also been in the mix. But now, a new name is making the rounds more than the others — Louisville Cardinals quarterback Tyler Shough.
In a dramatic turn of events, several reporters have been hearing that Tyler could be picked in the first round of the draft. The hype around the Louisville alum has grown over the last couple of weeks. On Tuesday, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported, “The quarterback I have heard being discussed in NFL circles more than any other lately is Louisville’s Tyler Shough.” Before Louisville, Shough played for Texas Tech and Oregon. Recently on The Pat McAfee Show, Peter Schrager of ESPN also dropped some interesting tidbits about Tyler. “I spoke to a GM who I really trust and is really good. And he’s like, well, if you’re looking for the best pure thrower of the ball, it’s Tyler Shough out of Louisville.” That’s a positive one.

Schrager did not reveal the GM’s name. But the ESPN reporter did admit that he found it quite shocking when he heard that. “And I’m like, Tyler Shough? And I’m like, oh, okay. I’m looking at this list here on your board, and there are several other names. And Tyler Shough’s not one of them.” There is a reason that Shough being picked in the first round of the draft is not sitting well with many. It’s been six years since the 25-year-old started playing college football.
While his college stats are decent enough, the truth is that Shough has been quite late starting his NFL journey. The QB will be turning 26 in September. Interestingly, even after the mixed opinions surrounding Tyler’s draft stock, one team seems to be giving the QB a closer look.
Tyler Shough gets the Giants’ attention ahead of draft
Do the Giants still need a QB? Well, yes, they do. Even if Russell Wilson plays like a Super Bowl champion and Jameis Winston turns heads with his performance, the team needs their long-term QB. And having the No. 3 overall pick, they will get a chance to pick the cream. So, the team is trying everything before they make the final decision. Lately, the Giants are scheduling private workout sessions with top QB prospects, including Shedeur Sanders and Jalen Milroe.
New York is also planning a meeting with Tyler Shough, as per Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. That’s right. As per reports, the Louisville QB will work out for the Giants sometime this week. Tyler, in his 2024 season with the Louisville Cardinals, played in 12 games. The 25-year-old racked up 3,195 yards with 23 TDs. During his college career, Shough suffered multiple injuries. Interestingly, he is the oldest QB prospect in this year’s draft.
So, while he’s got the attention of many across the league, it’s very unlikely that the Giants, or any other team, will use their top pick to draft him when there are better options out there. With the Titans possibly picking Miami’s Cam Ward, the Giants might go for Shedeur Sanders if the Browns pass on picking a QB at No. 2.
Now, it’ll be interesting to see if Tyler can still sneak into the first round and shock everyone on draft night.
