During the 2024 season, the former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback, Carson Beck, had left his fans on the edge of their seats. He wrote the best suspense thriller but ended with an anticlimax. Why? ‘Cause last season, Beck had broken back-to-back records, hitting his career high of 459 yards against Mississippi State. So, it was obvious that he would opt to fly high in the NFL. But he chose to pull his reverse gear by committing to Mario Cristobal’s Miami Hurricanes. However, in the meantime, he struggled with a right shoulder injury. This might have been a reason for Cristobal’s anxiety about Beck. Turns out that the spring has ushered in some good news for the Miami fam.
The Bulldogs hit the gridiron for the SEC Championship game against the Texas Longhorns on December 7. Even though Kirby Smart’s boys came with a 22-19 overtime win, the injury gods thought of sprinkling some blessings on Beck. He got injured in the right elbow. It was a serious one, so much so that he had to undergo surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). Automatically, it was highly likely to have a detrimental impact on his draft stocks. Beck then thought of taking a U-turn. But he wanted to start afresh and swapped wagons to Cristobal’s squad. So, you can imagine how the HC might have been carrying the weight of an injured quarterback on his shoulders. But he sounded all optimistic during a press meet at the beginning of April.
“I don’t know. I know he’s throwing some other things, you know, he’s doing those other rehab contraptions, those balls or whatnot, and it’s right there. I mean, we feel great about it. He’s taking part, not only in walkthrough, but also in team.” But Miami was yet to have the confirmation about Beck being fit. And here comes the end to the waiting game. On April 11, National College Football Reporter for CBS Sports, Brandon Marcello, came up with a big update. He tweeted, “Miami QB Carson Beck will begin throwing footballs Monday, coach Mario Cristobal told @CBSSports/@247Sports. The Georgia transfer underwent elbow surgery in December.” It’s definitely good news for the Miami fam. However, they would have loved to see Beck in action this spring.

Bad luck! The Hurricanes conclude their spring practice on Saturday, April 12. Even though he comes to action after that, there will be a lot of questions looming about his ability for next season. The 2025 chapter is yet to pull up the curtains, but the national media’s best quarterbacks rankings have already started to do rounds. For example, the On3 analyst Andy Staples is all ready with his list. And guess what? He places Beck at No.10 – much of a consolation prize, huh? Almost on the verge of falling out of the top 10 rank any moment. Well, Miami is not expecting Beck to be a Cam Ward 2.0. But they, too, count on the former Georgia quarterback.
After all, they are aware that had his teammates at Georgia last season not dropped the ball as often, Beck might be a first-round pick this year alongside Ward. Miami’s offensive coordinator didn’t hold back—and just like that, the QB’s respect meter spiked.

Maybe this is what that Beck has been in dire need of. After all, he did go through dark times on the professional front. When it came to his love life, things had hit sour notes as the quarterback got into a controversy, fueling breakup buzz with sweetheart Hanna Cavinder. Going by the hush-hush, the duo has parted ways. So, Beck must be looking for some positive juice to feed his mental health. That’s when Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson entered the chat.
At the right place, at the right time! The coach showed interest in exploring what the quarterback must have been going through mentally since he has been canceled from the spring game. He studied Beck in and out. And what was his analysis? “[I have learned] a couple of things. His football IQ is really high. He’s played a lot of football, and so when you talk to him about plays or the regurgitation of plays and in the meeting room, you can tell he’s played a lot of football and also that his personality comes out over time.”
Carson Beck’s welcoming personality makes it easier for the other person to spend time with him. The former Georgia quarterback did not just focus on building himself up professionally – he did water the plants around, building relationships and rapport with the coaches and teammates.
Now, if Beck needs some advice to have a successful first year in Miami, he knows where to look. His predecessor Cam Ward advised, “You should at least throw 30 touchdowns a year. I think the previous record was 20-something. I did that in four games at UIW, so it’s not hard to know break records here, but I think the biggest thing that I would tell Carson is just to be himself and try to win games.” Now, with the full squad in his corner, the question remains: Will Carson Beck finally show he’s that guy?
