Miami Assistant Coach Drops Big Carson Beck Statement as Mario Cristobal’s Confession Sparks Doubts

5 min read

Carson Beck remains the biggest reward yet the biggest gamble for the Hurricanes. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal continues to amp up his potential. But Beck’s spring practice is still confined to a certain physical limit. Although after a dire wait, the former Georgia signal-caller is finally throwing, his action doesn’t speak volumes for an obvious reason. Beck’s elbow surgery healing is underway. The guy hit a personal low as well, breaking up with his girl, Hanna Cavinder, a few weeks back and dealt with a lot of online vitriol. But despite all the bumps and stones, Beck is thriving.

It’s not always about throwing the ball or making an outright impact on the practices. Sometimes, it’s more about the intangibles that set the tone for a prosperous future. Beck’s exactly wrapping up those pre-season works. He is building good relationships and understanding the game and the culture. Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson didn’t take it for granted at all.

His football IQ is really high. He’s played a lot of football. So when you talk to him about plays or the regurgitation of plays and in the meeting room, you can tell he’s played a lot of football and also that his personality comes out over time. Dawson continued singing praise to the UM’s $4.5 million asset during his interaction with the Locked on Canes podcast.

“He’s a guy that once you spend a lot of time around him and get to know him, he’s a fun guy to be around, his personality comes out. Not necessarily at first, but as time goes on, you can see it now, like his rapport with the group and his interaction.  He’s done a really good job of building relationships with people in a fast way because it has to happen.”

Beck has come off a tumultuous past and an injury baggage from Georgia. Ever seen a boat floating through the high tides? At one stroke, it goes to the highest, and the next, it dwindles to the lowest! That’s the metaphor for Carson Beck’s last two years at Athens. In 2023, Beck led the Bulldogs to a 12-1 record and an Orange Bowl victory with a monster stat under his belt. As 2024 loomed large, he saw a significant drop in performances. Eventually, he made an embarrassing interception record (12) for the season.

Just when Beck seemed to be a bit settled, a right elbow injury wreaked havoc on his brief comeback treasure. During the SEC championship game against Texas, Beck palpably crawled to the pain in the field. That was the last time Beck donned the red and black! The rest of the saga is an added plot twist. Beck flipped his NFL decision overnight to join the portal and chose the Miami Hurricanes within days.

The only person who had never given Beck a second thought was Mario Cristobal. He sees a missing link between Cam and Beck and thinks he can perfectly fit the UM offense after Cam left the show. The injury was the only area Cristobal couldn’t come clean about. Also, his latest assurance sounds hollow as we are inching closer to the end of spring.

Carson Beck formula looks a bit dicey yet promising for the Miami offense

Cristobal was always hopeful that Beck would start making an impact pretty soon. Even a week back, he said Beck would throw soon, probably within weeks. While that came out partially true, the former Georgia quarterback has kept himself invested in film study and mental reps so far. Did the delay finally shake up Cristobal’s hope? Well, when it’s tricky to dig out, there has been, at least, a slight letdown in the head coach’s tone.

When asked about whether the QB will be thrown in the last week of the spring, Cristobal shuts the question down with a straight “I don’t know.” While Beck is still attending rehab for his healing, the UM pressure is significantly rising as the opener approaches. But it’s still safe to bet a dime on him.

Beck might not channel that super athletic beast that he is during the injury care period, but he is picking up valuable lessons. Just like the OC, Cristobal batted for his QB, “[Beck]’s taken part not only in walkthroughs but also in team setting drills that allow him to hand the ball off. Goes for every progression. Stays up there and watches a relentless film, or relentlessly watches a film. It will be interesting to see how Beck quickly bounces up and silences all the noise, like quality Bluetooth earbuds.
