$701,000 Worth Allen Iverson Auction Breaks Records as Massive Sale Turns Heads

3 min read

With Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant mostly dominating the collectibles game, it’s Allen Iverson’s time to shine. The former Philadelphia 76ers star hasn’t had much luck when it comes to the selling price of his collectibles. However, he did elevate one of His Airness’ jersey prices as the one worn by MJ when he faced Iverson’s famous crossover was auctioned for $4.7 Million. Not such huge numbers, but the recent AI collectible has still surpassed expectations at auction.

A 1997 Skybox E-X 2001 Essential Credentials Now card, graded a five by PSA, just sold for a jaw-dropping $701,500 at Heritage Auctions. That’s right—over $700K! This isn’t just a big sale, but it’s officially the highest-selling Allen Iverson collectible ever.

To put that into perspective, the previous record for an AI item was $79,200, as reported by Heritage Auctions. Sure, only three of these Skybox cards were ever made, so it was always going to be valuable. But here’s the kicker—even Heritage Auctions is likely to be surprised by the sale considering they told TMZ Sports that they were expecting the card would sell for around $200,000.

Clearly, the bidders had other plans. What’s even more surprising? The card isn’t in mint condition. According to the auction site, it has minor corner rounding, visible surface wear, and even some chipping on the edges. The original gloss? Fading. But none of that stopped 58 eager bids from rolling in.

As for the new owner, their identity remains a mystery. But with a price tag like that, it won’t be a surprise if the other two ’97 Skybox AI cards hit the auction block soon. Iverson’s collectibles are finally getting the love they deserve.

Allen Iverson’s sneakers that previously hit auction made way less than expectations

Back in 2001, Allen Iverson led the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Finals, taking on the powerhouse Los Angeles Lakers that had Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. The odds were stacked against the 76ers, but Iverson had other plans. Remember that iconic Game 1 where he crossed over Tyronn Lue and stepped over him? That was Iverson doing what he did best—defying expectations as he led the Sixers to a 107-101 win.

At the time, Iverson was rocking his Reebok Answer IVs, a black-and-white colorway that’s still etched in the hearts of sneakerheads and NBA fans alike. But here’s the kicker—those very shoes he wore in June 2001, hit the auction block in 2023 and didn’t fetch nearly as much as people thought they would.

So, what went wrong? According to a shoe collector, black mold on the sneakers seriously hurt their value. Sure, they were 22 years old, but you’d think their historical significance would overshadow a bit of wear and tear, right?

The bidding started at $7,500, and the final sale price was just $21,405. For a piece of basketball history like that, it feels like a steal. Just not in the way fans were hoping. So it’s quite heartening to see an Allen Iverson collectible do so well at the auction now.
