JuJu Watkins has never been one for loud reactions. Even when praise comes from a legend like Dawn Staley, she lets her presence speak louder than words.
Staley said in a statement for Juju Watkins on receiving the POTY award. “I couldn’t be more honored to have her name etched alongside this award.”
JuJu didn’t need to respond using a paragraph. She simply reposted the quote to her Instagram story, replying with three gratitude hand emojis and two red hearts. Quiet. Classy. Pure JuJu.
On March 14, it was announced that South Carolina’s own MiLaysia Fulwiley was among four finalists for the Dawn Staley Award—a recognition given to the NCAA Division I guard who embodies Staley’s signature qualities: scoring, vision, ball-handling, and an unmatched will to win. Joining Fulwiley were Paige Bueckers (UConn), Hannah Hidalgo (Notre Dame), and Watkins herself.
Despite a torn ACL that ended her tournament run early, Watkins was named the award’s recipient on April 4. It was a moment of respect from one generational guard to another—Staley honoring a rising star who’s already shaping the future of the game.
