2025 NFL Draft Buzz: Browns’ Andrew Berry’s Smart Extension for 28YO TE Adds Weight to Cam Ward’s No. 2 Draft Hype

4 min read

This time, it’s more than a QB situation stealing the headlines. After a disastrous 3-14 campaign, the Cleveland Browns sit at No. 2 in the 2025 NFL Draft. That’s a good position to land a franchise QB. And the developments are pointing towards one particular guy — Cam Ward. A couple of days after Miami’s Pro Day, Cam Ward met with the Browns’ front office. Owner Jimmy Haslam, GM Andrew Berry, and HC Kevin Stefanski made the trip to Florida for a private workout with the Heisman finalist. But… that wasn’t the only business on the table.

Aside from their meeting with Cam Ward, the Browns brass also engaged in a notable conversation with their 28-year-old star TE David Njoku and his agent, Malki Kawa. BrownsNation.com uploaded an update by Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot on X on March 31. The post reads—“Browns insider believes the team will extend David Njoku before the regular season.” Per Cabot, “the Browns checked in with Njoku’s agent during their private workout with Cam Ward.” Now, the question is—is there an extension looming?

With David Njoku entering the final year of his contract, it appears Andrew Berry is looking to lock down one of Cleveland’s most reliable playmakers before the 2025 season kicks off. A former first-round pick out of Miami in 2017, the 6’4, 246-pounder has been a staple of the Browns’ offense for nearly a decade. After signing a 4-year, $54.75 million extension in 2022, he emerged as a Pro Bowl-caliber weapon.

In his eight seasons with the Browns, David Njoku amassed 351 catches for 3,769 yards and 30 TDs. And with QB Deshaun Watson’s future uncertain following an Achilles injury, his presence will be a security blanket for whoever takes the reins at QB. Potentially Cam Ward? Well, on March 19, the pair linked up at what appeared to be a training complex.

Tagging Ward on his IG story, Njoku posted a video that showed the future NFL star arriving, playfully calling out “Cleveland, Cleveland.” The Browns’ TE played along, saying, “talk to me nicely,” and laughed. It’s a lighthearted moment, but it piques the curiosity of what their offense would look like. But that scenario isn’t without a layer of complexity.

Cam Ward’s No. 2 draft pick conundrum

Cleveland holds the No. 2 overall pick, but will Cam Ward even be there that long? NFL insiders believe that the Tennessee Titans are locked in on taking the QB with their first overall pick. ESPN’s Adam Schefter echoed this perception, saying, “Zero chance, zero chance that Cam Ward is gonna make it to the Giants at 3. Just not gonna happen. So, I expect Cam Ward will be the No. 1 pick in the draft, whether that’s Tennessee or Cleveland or the New York Giants making that pick.”

So what does this mean for Andrew Berry’s team? He might have to entertain the idea of trading up if Cam Ward is truly their guy. And Ward is a statement QB, apparent from his tremendous growth from an FCS program to rack up 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns in his final collegiate season with the Hurricanes.

With Watson’s status uncertain and the franchise at a crossroads, the Browns have a massive decision to make. Is Cam Ward worth trading up for? And will David Njoku’s extension be the first domino to fall in securing Cleveland’s offensive future?
