It’s never easy to navigate past a nasty injury, but things get much worse when you mix that with a doping ban hiatus. Simona Halep has experienced something similar in the past few years and her impending struggles due to injury woes have forced her to contemplate retirement thoughts. Naturally, the update shocked fans and left them clueless about what’s next for the Romanian star.
The former World No. 1 hasn’t consistently competed on the WTA in the past three years, all thanks to her doping ban from October 2022. She tested positive for the banned anabolic roxadustat at the 2022 US Open, and despite returning to the fold in February 2024 following a successful appeal to her dope ban, Halep featured in just two tour-level events and two challenger-level tournaments. Every last one of her outings ended prematurely in the opening round.
She earned a wildcard for the Australian Open qualifying round this season but unfortunately, the Romanian star later withdrew after struggling with shoulder and knee injuries. With minimal play participation on the tour, Halep considers retirement isn’t that far off. Having started the year outside of the top 800 WTA ranking and seeing as her injury woes have taken a substantial toll on her performance, the two-time Major winner admitted that retirement “goes through my mind very often” ahead of the 2025 Transylvania Open.
She said during a pre-tournament presser, “The knee injury I have is quite serious and difficult to recover from. I don’t know if I’m afraid to push myself, but when I feel pain, it’s hard to play at my highest level. It’s very difficult to get back to where I was, especially after such a long break. The thought of retiring crosses my mind very often. I’ve reached an age where I have injuries that are hard to recover from.”

“My knee won’t heal completely—I was advised to undergo surgery, but it’s a complicated procedure, and I don’t think I will go through with it. We’ll see what happens next. Life moves forward, and I’ll take things as they come,” she added. Halep also expressed exploring life outside tennis if the end of her illustrious tennis career nears. “Tennis is not everything in life. I have many desires and goals beyond the sport.”
With strong credentials boasting her laudable WTA resume, the Romanian continued saying: “Everything I have done has been extraordinary… I may not have even dreamed of becoming World No. 1 and winning two Grand Slam titles. I worked hard for it, and I feel fulfilled as a tennis player. Now, I want to do something else, not just tennis. The first part of my life was all about tennis; now, I want to explore other things.”
Hearing this, fans immediately took to their social media to express their surprise at the shock development.
Fans speculate 2025 could be Simona Halep’s final touring season on the WTA
Simona Halep’s retirement thoughts sent tennis fans into a state of shock as they took to their respective X handles to voice their disappointment. One user expressed, “It would be a shame for her career to end like this. But only she knows what is best for her.” Another fan highlighted, “It will be so hard to see her go,” while another opined that the Romanian star “has already made her decision. Best wishes to her. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her play.”
For those unaware, Halep isn’t the first professional to consider retirement after injury concerns adversely derailed plans to restore high-quality tennis. ATP star players like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal experienced a similar fate as their physical woes rendered them unable to maintain a formidable form on the tour. On the women’s side, Dinara Safina and Monica Seles were some of the prominent personalities whose careers were ruined due to injuries.
