The 2024-25 season will mark the end of an era for one of the New York Rangers’ greatest stars, not on the ice, but off it. Sam Rosen, the Rangers’ play-by-play announcer for 40 years, will bid adieu to the sport at the end of this season. With decades of service to the sport and the Rangers, Rosen will leave behind massive shoes to fill. However, before bidding adieu to the team, he had a hilarious plea for the Rangers’ players that went in vain. As a result, fans were left disappointed on social media.
It has not been a great season for the Rangers, winning just 33 of their 70 games played this season. With this, they are lying in the fifth spot in the Metropolitan Division and are in serious danger of missing out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs spot. However, Rosen wanted to prolong his season and thus had a request for the Rangers.
Making a hilarious plea, he said, “I’m trying to drag this team into the playoffs with Me… They are not listening to me.” Notably, the Rangers have suffered four back-to-back defeats, jeopardizing their playoff chances. In an ultra competitive Eastern Conference, with several teams vying for the wildcard spots, any slip-up will be punished. Severely.
So it’s no surprise to see Rosen’s humorous call to action. He’s doing all he can to extend his final season with the team but the Blushirts seem to have other plans on the agenda. As a result, New York Rangers fans were not happy with one of Rosen’s last requests not being followed.
New York Rangers fans saddened as Sam Rosen’s plea goes in vain
In what is Rosen’s final season of his illustrious career, he was hoping for his team to make it to the business end of the tournament so that he could prolong his stay with them. However, it looks like this won’t happen as they succumbed to four straight defeats recently. Naturally, fans were busy discussing the situation on the Rangers’ subreddit. Thus, a fan wrote, “How disappointing for Sam. He deserved better for his final season.” Indeed, it is turning out to be a forgettable farewell season for Sam, who has served his team for four decades.
Furthermore, one fan was all praise for Rosen while strongly criticizing the players for a lack of effort in the recent games. “Sam is a natural treasure. He seems like the nicest guy on earth and has a great sense of humor lol. It’s an absolute shame the quality and effort we’ve put on the ice for him in his final year, he deserves so much better,” the fan said, as he felt disappointed by the Rangers’ lack of intensity in games.
Meanwhile, another fan had a rather blunt analogy while explaining the reason behind the team’s bad performances this season. The comment by the fan read, “The lack of effort has been the most frustrating thing this season. Surely teens at Dunkin Donuts put in more effort to their jobs than this year’s team.” It has been a collective collapse by the team in recent games, with no player standing up for the team’s cause.
While this has been a topsy-turvy season for the New York Rangers, the previous season was also disappointing as they failed to reach the Stanley Cup Finals after a disappointing loss in the conference finals. Thus, a fan wrote, “As disappointing as last year’s ending was, I sometimes wish that last season was the last year for Sam. It would’ve been a much better season compared to this sorryfest.” With this season being worse than last year, the fan felt that Rosen should’ve called time on his career last year itself and spared himself the performances of this season.
Lastly, one of the fans couldn’t stop praising Rosen for the years of service that he had delivered for the Rangers. Thanking him for his contribution, the Rangers fan wrote, “Sam is a true NY Ranger. The rest are a bunch of over priced snowflakes.” With this brutal assessment of the Rangers’ players, the fan felt sorry that Rosen couldn’t get a more memorable end to his career.
Earlier today, the New York Rangers organized a special ceremony to honor Rosen ahead of their game against the Canucks. However, they have had a poor start to the game and are currently a goal down after the end of the first period. Can they come back strongly and end their losing streak and make a renewed push for the playoffs? Let us know your views in the comments below.
