Steve Kerr proved why he is one of the best coaches in the league. Last night, Stephen Curry became the first person in the history of the NBA to drop 4000 three-pointers. It was truly an unbelievable feat. And rightly so, the 4x NBA Champ received praise across the NBA world. However, Coach Kerr, who was also impressed with the record, didn’t wait any longer to put forward another task for the Baby-faced Assassin. Most importantly, this tough task may clash with Steph’s latest statement on retirement.
Anyway, let’s focus on Kerr’s task for his superstar. During the post-game presser, a reporter asked the 59-year-old a hypothetical question. I mean, why not? The Dubs were on a roll and Kerr didn’t mind it. The reporter asked how many more threes can Steph shoot before the end of his career. In return, 9x NBA Champ took a moment and said, “8,000. Yeah, who knows,” leaving the rest of the reporters to laugh.
But then, Coach Kerr got a little serious… not very serious. He pointed out how it felt “Not too long ago“ when Steph broke Ray Allen’s record. “He just keeps going the way. He keeps himself in shape and condition, in rhythm. He’s… going to make another 1000 for sure, I mean… That’s what I would guess, but who knows?” Kerr mused. Well, looking at the superstar’s hot run, it might seem like a doable task, but there are a lot of factors that could affect it.
The first and foremost factor is age, and the second is the nagging injuries. The 37-year-old, playing in the final stretch of his career, has a lot of odds stacked against him, as he continues to run toward glory. More importantly, Steph recently made a candid statement about his retirement. Let’s see how the statement affects Steve Kerr’s task.
Will retirement come in the way of Stephen Curry’s 5K Challenge?
A few weeks ago, even the Warriors fans felt Stephen Curry would hang up his boots anytime soon. Especially after he publicly said that he didn’t want the team to force any trade that could disrupt the future of the team. The team tried to find help for the ace shooter but failed miserably. When nothing was going in the team’s way, the Jimmy Butler trade came through. The rest is history!
The team is on a 13-1 run whenever the forward laces up. Now the superstar looks rejuvenated. If I am not exaggerating, looks like Steph from 2015! With this recharged mindset, Steph was asked about his retirement. His answer?
“I’ve tried to answer that question before and I’ve said a lot of different things just based on how I feel that day.” Now that we know how he feels lately, how far does his retirement stand? “It’s all kind of measured on what the style of ‘Can I get to that level that I expect for myself? It’s just a feeling like ‘Can I dominate a game? Can I play my style for 30+ minutes?’ Then you kind of reevaluate every year. So, I know how my contract’s lined up, and I’d like to outplay that for sure. How long that goes, I have no idea,” he further added.
So, with 2 more seasons left in his contract, we can say that he would stick around for two more seasons. But can he stay longer? That only depends on the team’s postseason run. So, can he drop 1000 more treys? Let us know in the comments.
