Just a few days back, Michael Johnson admitted, “I don’t think I can save track and field.” But while the creator of GST seems to be shaking in his faith to change the scene, there is one man who seems more than confident in that very challenge. But who is this guy? Well, it is none other than shot-putter Ryan Crouser. But the circumstances in which he broke this news might surprise everyone. But what’s so special about it, you ask? Well, the man just got married on March 6, and he has already claimed to be the savior of the track and field. How?
Taking to his Instagram on 13th March 2025, the American track and field athlete posted a video captioned, “Coming soon…” The video had Ryan entering the frame with a jacket, which he then opened halfway down only to reveal a t-shirt that read, “WSPS.” If someone had any doubt what that meant, he made it clear in the caption, citing, “@worldshotputseries #WSPS #olympics.”
The post was also made in collaboration with the official account of the World Shot Put Series, which is also the first on the account. Back in September 2024, the 32-year-old said on the CITIUS MAG Podcast that he is planning an “American shotput league.” What the man told MAG was that there were plans for a soft launch in the spring of 2025, and here it is: the official Shot Put World Series, a new format highlighting one of track and field’s most exciting events.
By this news, Ryan most probably hints towards what he said in the podcast, that the league will be focusing on the aspects that make throwing events more marketable and presenting those to an American audience in a format that makes sense. Shot put has always been a part of track and field athletics meets; its separate league can bring a lot of success and fame to the sport and who better to pioneer it than the shot put world record holder in both the indoors and outdoors? This has also drawn a lot of reactions from the fans as well.
Fans react to Ryan Crouser’s announcement
The very first reaction came from the University of Texas track and field alumni, 2 x NCAA Champion and Ryan’s fellow short putter, Tripp Piperi, who just commented, “,” we might see him in the league. Piperi’s comment drew a reply from the University of Rhode Island’s athlete, Theo Puterbaugh, who said, “Are you hyped? cuz I am definitely hyped!” Oh, we all are, Theo, we all are.
People also were amused that the man just got married, and he is onto a new thing now, just like this fan who said, “Someone just got married!” Now he’s ready to take on the Sinaloa Cartel!” Now, the shot putter is not fighting one of the most powerful and violent drug trafficking organizations in the world but what the fan meant was that the Olympians just got married and have taken up another challenge.
Some people are just overly excited with the news being all, “Uhhh, oh! What do we have here?” Some are also appreciating the 32-year-old for his initiative, like this person who said, “Love it that athletes are taking the competitions to their own hands ”; he wasn’t the only one to love it, though.
There was this other fan who said, “Love it. We need to just face it. Besides world championships and the Olympics, the runners can just go their own way. No longer the Red-Headed Stepchild. This is gonna be huge.” We sure do wish that the Shot Put World Series turned out to be a big hit, bringing more fame and success to the sport. What do you think of Ryan’s initiative? Let us know.
