Amanda Serrano Sums Up Breaking Ronda Rousey’s UFC Record in 3 Words

4 min read

Boxing has seen many great female fighters over the years, but few have left a mark like unified featherweight champion Amanda Serrano. A seven-division world champion, Serrano has competed in some of the sport’s biggest fights, solidifying her legacy as one of boxing’s all-time greats. Now, at 36, she has her sights set on something even bigger—one that ties her name to UFC icon Ronda Rousey.

‘Real Deal’ Serrano is coming off a unanimous decision loss to undisputed super lightweight champion Katie Taylor in November, which took place in the co-main event of Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson. This was their second encounter after their first fight in April 2022, which Taylor won via a split decision. Now, the two are set to clash once again in July at Madison Square Garden, New York, in an all-female card being put together by Jake Paul’s MVP for Netflix.

For Serrano, this fight carries extra significance—it presents an opportunity to break a record previously held by Rousey. But what record exactly? To answer that, we have to rewind a few days. During a recent interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, promoter Lou DiBella—who has worked with Serrano in the past—criticized her current promoter, Jake Paul, co-owner of MVP. Serrano didn’t take the comments lightly and fired back at DiBella, seizing the moment to make a bold prediction: she’s on the verge of surpassing Rousey’s record. “I’m the highest-paid female in boxing today & come July 11th I’ll be breaking Ronda Rousey’s record as the highest-paid female Combat sports athlete in history,” she responded on X.

The thing about @jakepaul & Nakisa is they don’t Lie to their fighters. Well they lied about making me a millionaire in a yr. They did it in 6 months!! lol

To put things into perspective, Ronda Rousey earned a total of $13 million during her UFC career—the highest career payout for any female fighter in the promotion’s history. On top of that, Rousey’s biggest paycheck came from her fight against Amanda Nunes in 2016—$4.8 million. This means Serrano can expect a paycheck higher than Rousey’s payout against Nunes.

Serrano has now summed up her ambition to break Rousey’s record in three words. “The ultimate record ,”  she declared in the next post. Meanwhile, Paul also commented on the matter on X, writing, “When Amanda Serrano enters the ring on July 11th, she will become the highest-paid woman in sports history for a single event. ALL SPORTS. Ronda Rousey had the record previously.” Amid all this, Amanda Serrano has revealed why Katie Taylor disappointed her.

Amanda Serrano was expecting Katie Taylor to do this

Amanda Serrano has expressed disappointment over Katie Taylor’s refusal to make their trilogy fight 12 three-minute rounds, equal to men’s championship bouts. Despite a previous handshake agreement, the fight on July 11 at Madison Square Garden will remain at 10 two-minute rounds. “I’m disappointed that Katie Taylor did not keep her word and make the trilogy 12 three-minute rounds, equal to the men,” Serrano stated. “This is a record-setting payday for both of us, and we owed it to the fans to honor the handshake deal we made. She didn’t.”

Despite this setback, Serrano remains determined to secure her first victory over Taylor. “Make no mistake, every time we share the ring, it is war, and I know Friday, July 11, will be the greatest yet because I will finally get the official W I deserve.”

Having said that, Amanda Serrano seems set to leave Ronda Rousey behind as the highest-paid female combat sports athlete. But whether Serrano can beat Taylor for the first time is yet to be seen. What are your thoughts on the matter?
