Baseball runs deep in the Leiter family tree. Jack Leiter, the Texas Rangers’ 24-year-old pitcher, isn’t just chasing MLB success—he’s upholding a storied legacy. His father, Al Leiter, a three-time World Series champion, paved the way, while his uncle, Mark Leiter, and cousin, Mark Leiter Jr., also made their mark in the big leagues. Jack has the pedigree—but is he living up to the Leiter legacy?
Jack Leiter had a brilliant outing in his 2024 MLB debut. How? Well, he went 0-3 with an 8.83 ERA, 31 strikeouts, and 17 walks in 9 games/6/6 starts. However, in the minor leagues, he put up some impressive performances, such as a start for Triple-A Round Rock in which he struck out 11 batters in 3.2 innings. His spring training outing this year, though, looks promising. Leiter reached 100 and sat at 98 mph with his four-seam fastball in one inning of work. A new and exciting prospect is coming through the line for the Rangers!

All credit for Jack Leiter’s excellence goes to his father, Al Leiter. Yes, that’s how Leiter Jr. likes to see it. “He’s had every role in my life, and baseball coach is one of them,” Leiter said in an interview with Foul Territory. He explained that his father had been a guiding force since his childhood. While his interview was heartwarming, to say the least, Leiter is projected in the five-man starting rotation for the Texas Rangers this year. 2025 will be Leiter’s first full year in MLB, but how is his team equipped to break through this year?
The Rangers’ breakthrough in 2025
The Rangers had a blast in 2023 by winning their first World Series ring after a 52-year wait. However, a sharp downfall in 2024, where they finished with a 78-84 record and even failed to get to the playoffs. The year 2024 is the first time they failed to reach the playoffs since 2000. Now, the question that arises is, how much are the Texas Rangers ready to turn the tide this year? The Rangers in 2025 boast a healthy Jacob deGrom, a newly rebuilt bullpen, and a redesigned offense. A healthy deGrom is what the team missed last year.
However, concerns regarding their pitching depth continue to be a major issue. A six-man rotation has been discussed recently because of pitching staff injuries that could affect overall effectiveness. In the end, the Texas Rangers’ chance to make the playoffs may depend on how successfully they manage their rotation. The positive for the team is their line of top prospects. This includes Jack Leiter, Sebastian Walcott, Kumar Rocker, and Malcolm Moore. Among them, Leiter is projected as the starting pitcher. Hence, a new-look and young team is going to contend for the ring this year!
The Texas Rangers’ performance in 2025 will determine if Leiter can rewind the magic of what his father did with the Marlins in 1997.
