Before the title bout on March 1 at Barclays Center, Gervonta Davis had the time of his life taking shots at Lamont Roach. Whenever the WBA lightweight champion got the chance, there was a slight dig against the Washington native. One such instance came during the pre-fight event, when Tank took a slight dig at the WBA super featherweight champion to bring his mother to the event. “I told him, leave his mom’s and, you know, the people, home. He still brought them. It’s crazy, man. It’s going to get bad,” stated Davis. Even though Gervonta Davis was nowhere near the level of usual trash-talking, the jab forced a reply out of the Washington native.
Despite being the underdog, Roach didn’t shy away from defending his and his mother’s pride. “What do you mean, why I bring her? She love to see me whoop a**,” replied a confident Roach. While many fans predicted that Roach’s confidence would bite him back, given how much of an underdog he was, the actual fight was something else entirely.
Roach put one of the best performances of recent times and not only took Gervonta Davis to the distance, but if it wasn’t for a controversial decision, he could have taken the title home.
Without a doubt, Roach and his family have acquired the rights to brag and they are not shying away from it.
Lamont Roach’s mother lauds son after Gervonta Davis fight
A few days after the fight, on Monday, Lamont Roach’s mother, Tia Roach, took to her Instagram to praise his son’s performance. Furthermore, she didn’t shy away from taking a swing at the WBA lightweight champion.
She uploaded a picture of the ninth round of the March 1 bout where Gervonta Davis could be seen running back to his corner. “Love you, son,” Tia captioned the picture. Even she was impressed by the performance of her son and summed it up in just two words, adding, “Just brilliant!” to the caption. While she never took a direct dig at the Baltimorean, the image used by her was enough to show that even she doesn’t agree with the official decision.
Lamont Roach reciprocated her mother’s love and commented on the picture. He wrote, “Love you too the moon & back what I look like showing up to the fight without you ,” claiming that he couldn’t imagine fighting without her in the crowd. Something he mentioned to Gervonta Davis in the pre-event as well.
The Reaper later uploaded the post on his story and wrote, “Why would I leave her home .” It was once again a callback to the remark made by Gervonta Davis at the press conference. Clearly, Lamont Roach’s performance at the Barclays Center has boosted his reputation and filled him and his family with the confidence to fire back at any doubters or critics.
