Imagine adding more fuel to a fire that has already wreaked havoc for quite some time. Sounds scary, right? Well, something like that could happen at the home of reigning Super Bowl Champions, Philadelphia Eagles. There’s a rumor swirling around that their dominant defense, which made a mockery out of the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl LIX, could get a new member. Make no mistake—this is no ordinary player. The one I am talking about here is expectational—the one you probably can’t find anywhere else other than Cleveland.
On Friday’s episode of the Scoop City Podcast, the Athletic’s Dianna Russini gave us a scoop that could be a warning to 31 other NFL franchises. “Here’s what some people are saying right now, that Howie’s willing to move on from some of these guys cause he’s looking to make a big swing and take a big swing, and that big swing would be for Myles Garrett.” Translation: Eagles GM Howie Rosman is predicted to make a sacrifice that could make them favorites for next year’s Super Bowl—if they weren’t already. Like adding a 6-time Pro Bowler DE to a defense that was a nightmare to offenses throughout last season would be a no-brainer for Philly.
The Eagles’ defense allowed only 278.4 yards per game (fewest in the league), and 17.8 points per game (second fewest in the league). And of course don’t forget the Super Bowl LIX win over the Chiefs. This Eagles defense at one point restricted the Chiefs to zero points until the dying moments of 3rd quarter. So, adding Garrett, who is in a league of his own, into this defense could turn out to be the biggest offseason move this year. However, going after Garrett would mean the Eagles cannot bring back some of their star defensive players from last season.

Impending free agents like Zack Baun, Milton Williams, and Josh Sweat could be allowed to leave for this audacious trade to go through. See, it’s almost certain that some of these players will sign new deals. But considering Russini’s latest scoop, the Eagles could be plotting for something else—something bigger and bolder. Let’s see whether they really get their hands on Garrett who is stuck in Cleveland. On one hand, the Browns are adamant they are not willing to trade their four-time All-Pro. And on the other hand, Garrett is hell-bent on starting a new chapter elsewhere.
Myles Garrett’s relationship with the Browns falls at an all-time low
In the NFL, where QBs are supposed to be the face of your franchise, the Browns had their icon on the other side of the ball. For eight straight seasons, Garrett has kept the Browns relevant with his monstrous defensive plays. Like the former No.1 overall has 102.5 career sacks. No matter how bad the Browns played offensively, Garrett always ensured he dominated the O-line on his day. Never before in the history of this league, a player recorded at least 14 sacks for 4 consecutive seasons. However, Garrett rewrote the history in a season where the Browns finished with only 3 wins out of 17 games.

So, obviously, he wouldn’t be happy to continue fighting when clearly the Browns aren’t interested in winning. Since expressing his desire to contest for the Super Bowl, while requesting a trade from Cleveland. The Browns have made one thing clear—they don’t see a future where Garrett is playing for someone else. Despite him making it clear he doesn’t wanna be associated with yet another rebuild (God knows how many more). Cleveland isn’t in a hurry to trade their $125M DE, who still has two years left on his contract. Hell, they even offered him more money through a contract extension before next season. Thinking—making him richer than he already is could change his stance. But it seems money is also not enough to keep Garrett in Cleveland.
Garrett’s camp has squashed any chance of signing a new deal. As per Mary Kay Cabot, Garrett has “slammed the door” on negotiations with the franchises that don’t respect his wishes. Looks like both sides of the table don’t wanna take a deal to call it even. So, it remains to be seen who will be the first one to budge. Will it be Garrett who eventually returns to Cleveland for two more seasons (out of his love for the city)? Or will it be the Browns who end up changing their stance on a player—who is clearly not interested in returning no matter what’s on the table. What do you think?
