“Block out all of that hatred because none of it matters at all.” Recently, Zaya Wade shared the one mantra that Gabrielle Union shared with her. Although the 17-year-old did not understand the full context of it, she now fully understands what her stepmom meant. At the age of 12, Dwyane Wade’s daughter came out as Trans, and now already runs the Translatable project. With growing popularity, Union shared her concern about Zaya.
“It’s scary, and I am in awe constantly of her bravery.” On The Daily Show with Desi Lydic, Union spoke highly about her daughter’s impact. She described that cheering for Zaya is similar to how the family celebrates Zaire’s dunk during games. There are a few anxious moments, but the stepmother is 100% standing behind her children.
“The way she stands up for herself and the way she fights just as hard as anyone else whose liberty, whose very existence, whose very humanity is at risk.” The Bring it On star continued, “She puts it all on the line; she is ten toes down, and she doesn’t back off for anybody. It doesn’t matter if you hold the highest seat in you know in our country or you’re Elon Musk.”
This statement suggests that Zaya will fight for the rights, not worrying about the political climate in the country. Seeing the fighting spirit, Gabrielle Union stated, “She’s a fighter, and so I’m proud I raised fighter, and I’m happy about that.” To support the 17-year-old, the family moved from Florida to California to provide a safe space for their daughter. Despite the changes in state, even Dwyane Wade once suggested if he was worried about his daughter or not.

The project Translatable helps young people by creating a safer LGBTQIA+ community. The Heat icon is also a co-founder of the project, and when the project launched last year, he spoke about his role as an activist. The Miami Heat legend, when Translatable went live, spoke with Them about his responsibility for speaking out for trans rights.

“People ask me, ‘Are you fearful? Are you afraid?’ I say, ‘Yes, I am.” In a conversation with Michael Cuby, Dwyane Wade continued, “Not only is my child in one of the most attacked communities in the world, the trans community and the LGBTQ+ community but also, my child is Black in America.’ That right there alone is enough for a parent.”
Zaya Wade’s efforts to uplift the LGBTQIA+ community were honored at The Out100 Gala in December. She found herself on their prestigious list, an honor reserved for those making waves in activism, media, and beyond. Maybe that’s why parents Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are slightly worried about their daughter. But she continues to make the most of her voice for the community.
