Charles Barkley has never been one to hold his tongue, and he’s not about to start now. Whether it’s politics, social justice, or the struggles of everyday Americans, the NBA legend isn’t afraid to speak his mind. And because of this, it is very evident that he’s not a fan of Donald Trump. Over the years, the NBA legend has voiced concerns about the current US president’s leadership. He’s criticized Trump’s approach to politics, calling out actions that he believes divide people rather than bring them together. Just last year, this is what he had to say about Trump’s supporters: “They’re crazy. They’re like your drunk friend.”
The stricter immigration policies that Trump has pushed have been sparking widespread debate. His administration has focused on deportations, stricter border security, and new regulations affecting undocumented immigrants. With all this going on, Chuck could not just sit and witness it happen without saying anything about it.
In a recent interview with WBRC 6 News, Barkley didn’t hold back. He made it clear that while immigration issues exist, mistreating people isn’t the answer. “The way they’re rounding up these immigrants is a disgrace,” he stated. He emphasized that many immigrants have been in the U.S. for years, working hard and contributing to the country. In his words, “First of all, immigrants built this country.” Separating families and harassing individuals, he argued, is simply wrong.

Barkley also shared a broader message of self-reliance. While acknowledging problems in both political parties, he urged people to take control of their own futures. “You have to handle your business,” he advised, stressing the importance of education and staying out of trouble. He warned that relying on the government for solutions often leads to disappointment. Despite his criticisms, Barkley’s message was ultimately one of unity. He reminded everyone that immigrants built America and that fairness should be at the heart of any policy.
Charles Barkley: Using his platform to inspire change
Charles Barkley is known for his outspoken nature, especially on Inside the NBA. However, beyond his sports commentary, he recognizes the responsibility that comes with being a Black figure in the media. During an interview with WBRC 6 News, he credited his grandmother for introducing him to figures like Nelson Mandela. “My grandma is the first person who ever said, ‘Hey, you need to learn about Nelson Mandela.’”
Her guidance helped him embrace his heritage while also recognizing the contributions of allies. He also recalled the influence of Dr. C. Vivian, who reminded him that many white individuals stood beside Black activists during the civil rights movement.
Beyond remembering history, Barkley is dedicated to helping future generations. His support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) stems from his belief in financial empowerment. “I want those kids to get their education… so they can control their economic opportunity.”
While he acknowledges racism, he also points out that all races, whether Black, White, Hispanic, etc., have their own struggles. According to Barkley, the economic divide is bigger than just race and needs to be worked on at a deeper level. And Barkley isn’t shirking his responsibility as well. Recently, he even donated $250,000 to GLIDE to help the homelessness problem in San Francisco.
Barkley’s journey highlights the challenges of being a Black public figure. By staying true to his beliefs and using his platform wisely, he continues to challenge societal norms and inspire future generations.
