19-year-old Angelo Ferrari is making big waves in the NCAA wrestling circuit. Brother of A.J. Ferrari, the Iowa freshman recently had an upset win over OSU’s All-American Dustin Plott. While it may be one of the most impressive wins of his career, Ferrari has just started yet and still has a long way to go in his wrestling career. As he sets his sights on the big stage, the Iowa Hawkeyes received some advice regarding Ferrari from Eli McKown of Hawk Central.
As a high schooler, Ferrari already became the three-time state champion in Texas and a three-time Ironman champion. However, at the college level, he competes in the 184-pound weight class, just like Nittany Lions phenom, Carter Starocci. With Starocci as dominant as ever and all set to claim his 5th NCAA title, it’s not going to be an easy feat for anyone to get between Starocci and his goal. Thus, McKown advised that Ferrari play a wait-and-watch game at the NCAA championships rather than deploy him against Starocci.
In his Q&A column, McKown wrote, “For Ferrari, using that redshirt and waiting for the graduation of Carter Starocci of Penn State and Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa would be ideal for many reasons. Most of all, he may return next year to 184 and be the favorite to win a title based on what we have seen out of the youngster.”
He went on to vouch for Gabe Arnold instead, “On the flip side, Arnold can absolutely be an All-American this year for Iowa, and the Hawkeyes will use a year of his eligibility this year whether he is in the postseason or not.”
Meanwhile, Angelo Ferrari is riding high on the back of his shock win over OSU’s Dustin Plott. This enabled Iowa to win 21-16 over Oklahoma State and even pip them in the rankings to move up to second place. It was an important victory in the context of the NCAA championships, and Ferrari got his preparations spot on before defeating Plott.
Angelo Ferrari channels a never-say-die attitude
Ferrari is part of a star-studded Hawkeyes team that boasts some renowned names in the wrestling world at the college level, like Stephen Buchanan II and Gabe Arnold. While he may be a freshman, Ferrari put on a rather mature display against Dustin Plott to cause a major upset.
Following his massive win, Angelo Ferrari talked to the reporters, during which he opened up about his training and preparations in the lead-up to his bout against Plott.
Ferrari revealed, “Honestly, every day I’m in those situations with Stephen Buchanan. Every day I’m in that situation where he might ride me. But then I’ve got to push through. If I’m taking down Stephen Buchanan, there’s no way I can’t take down that guy [Dustin Plott]. The confidence is that and the best partners in the country, man. I just, can’t be there without them. And without, you know, I’m just blessed for everything. God’s blessed me with these partners and these teammates.”
Recently, he was also named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week and Big Ten Freshman of the Week following his exploits on the mat against the Cowboys. This season is shaping up to be the one where he just begins to warm up. But next season? We may indeed get to see the best version of Angelo Ferrari yet.
