Chiefs Officially Announce Big Travis Kelce News as Andy Reid Takes Huge $23.4 Million Roster Decision

3 min read

Travis Kelce couldn’t process what was happening on February 9. Patrick Mahomes was hit by a pick six. Their 3-peat dreams came crashing down as the Eagles ravaged them. Everyone thought that he would retire. Already 35 years of age, he had a bad 2024 season (by his high standards) with only 823 receiving yardsl. The lowest ever in his 12 year NFL career except his rookie year in 2013 when he started zero games. Surprise!

On February 27, the Chiefs shocked everyone (and cheered up their fans) by announcing that the big man is back. They posted a photo of the tight end with a perfect 2-word caption that read, “YEAR 13.” It’s official now. Chiefs GM, Brett Veach, had earlier confirmed that Kelce messaged him that he would play the 2025 season. It comes against the backdrop of another solid decision by the franchise.

Ex-NFLer and ESPN analyst, Pat McAfee, also confirmed the news. He even cited one source from the network who claimed that Travis Kelce was ‘fired up‘ after the Super Bowl LIX loss. They were favorites for a 3-peat. But the Eagles didn’t only defeat them, they annihilated them, stopping them from scoring in the first 43 minutes of the big game.

This development made everyone in the Chiefs kingdom happy. TE’s friend, Patrick Mahomes, was so joyed that he retweeted this news with a short video from ‘The Last Dance’ docuseries. It’s clear. They are happy. Entering his last year in 2025, Taylor Swift’s BF carries a $19.8 million cap hit, saving $5.8 million in cap space.

It also marks positive news for the HC Andy Reid. He would have one less position to worry about, at least in the upcoming season.

Chiefs might retain Travis Kelce’s teammate

To keep their O-line powerful, the Chiefs signed their guard Trey Smith on a franchise tag. NFL insider Ian Rapoport delighted everyone as he posted, “The #Chiefs are planning to franchise tag star guard Trey Smith, sources say. An intriguing move, as KC keeps one of its best players for $23.4M on a 1-year, fully guaranteed deal.

In 67 games over 4 seasons, Travis Kelce’s teammate recorded 4435 snaps. He has protected Patrick Mahomes countless times. But the HC Andy Reid has plenty of work to do after seeing the Eagles sack their QB 6 times, even getting a pick six. So, it was their best bet. But we have seen the Chiefs waver off their tracks as well.

Last year, they placed the franchise tag on CB L’Jarius Sneed. While everyone was hoping for an extension, they traded him to the Titans. So, it’s a mystery if they see a long future with Trey Smith or would trade him as well. For now, the 2024 Pro Bowler has secured his place.

Things are moving at a fast pace in the league. The Scouting Combine is underway in Indianapolis. As free agency approaches, expect more changes in the rosters of the teams.
