National Reporter Confirms $49.6M Headache for Sean McVay’s Rams After Announcing Matthew Stafford’s NFL Return for 2025

The Los Angeles Rams were sent packing in the wild-card round by eventual Super Bowl contenders, Philadelphia Eagles. After the game, the 36-year-old Matthew Stafford was asked about his future in the NFL. And the Rams QB had said, “I’ll take some time to think about it. But I feel like I was playing some pretty good ball… I’ll talk about my present. Proud to be associated with this group … It was a hell of an effort all year to get to this point. Any time you play like this … and come up short, it’s even tougher.” Sean McVay‘s QB was unsure and the Rams’ future was blurry. But there’s good news for the herd—insider reports suggest Stafford will be back on the NFL gridiron.

But the decision has created some headaches for the front office. Before he starts off the new season with the Rams, the franchise has to weigh up his $49.6 million salary cap. Matthew Stafford signed a four-year $160 million deal with the franchise in 2022. Apart from a $12 million prorated signing bonus, they’d have to cover his $23 million base salary and further bonuses on top. If he were to stick with the Rams for 2026, the overall cap would go up to $53.6 million, with his base salary rising to $26 million.

Is he worth it? Sure. But is there a better long-term plan they can work out with that amount of money? That’s what they’ll be asking themselves.

Stay tuned as we bring you updates!
