It’s never easy to see your comrades fighting tooth and nail while you have to sit on the sideline. But for Charlie McAvoy, it seems to be a greater cause that’s urging him to show up nonetheless. The Bruins defenseman’s upper-body injury had ruled him out of the 4 Nations championship game between the USA and Canada, but that doesn’t seem enough to keep him away from witnessing the action himself.
The Boston star posted an Instagram story just hours ago on February 20. Captioned, “Free as a bird,” McAvoy’s post shows him in a car and on the road as Lynyrd Skynyrd’s iconic tune plays in the car’s stereo. While the caption and the song would suggest McAvoy isn’t feeling the pressure, the emojis in the social media update hint at a different story. The USA flag followed by the saluting emoji underscores his allegiance to the nation and his determination to stand beside his teammates for their final showdown at the international tournament.
Considering the fact that NHL.com’s Dan Rosen had also stated that Charlie would be at the TD Garden despite his condition, one would easily come to think the hockey star was en route to the venue to provide his teammates with some morale for the 4 Nations finale. “He obviously can’t play because of his upper-body injury, but he is expected to be in attendance,” Rosen’s X post also claims McAvoy will be cheering for Team USA despite his physical condition.
