The 49ers are experiencing a lot right now. The team has already lost a huge receiver, Deebo Samuel, through trade, and it appears they are aiming to do the same with another. Per reports the organization is looking to free some enormous cap space, therefore they are willing to trade out big names. The HC Kyle Shanahan is losing key players here so that the team may provide Brock Purdy with a massive contract. The QB has a massive demand, and due to this, Brandon Aiyuk’s future is in concern.
Shocked? Well, we are, too. But, this is the rumor that is spreading like a bullet throughout the NFL world. The outstanding 27-year-old WR can be traded by the 49ers. And the Cleveland Browns are the team pressing hardest for this trade. After all, this is not the first time they have talked to the 49ers about this trade. The Browns already planned for this trade to take place in August 2024, but it never occurred. Once again, Cleveland is open to this trade, and the 49ers appear to be interested as well.
The 49ers need some cap room, and Aiyuk has a $22.855 million option bonus. This money for the young WR will be triggered on April 1. So if this deal is supposed to happen, it will happen within the next few days. If we go back a few months, the Browns made a huge trade offer to the San Francisco 49ers in August that included veteran wide receiver Amari Cooper, as well as second and fifth-round draft picks. Their plan was for the 49ers to acquire a veteran wide receiver while the Browns would gain a budding star. Making it a win-win situation.
The discussions were at their peak at the time, but the trade got canceled. One reason the WR did not go to the Browns was that the team lacked a competent QB. But now Cleveland has the option to pick Shedeur Sanders in the draft. So, it’s obvious that the team can move forward with bringing Aiyuk on board. But the WR is undoubtedly a valuable asset, so the 49ers would be hesitant to make this trade.
The organization just needs cap space, thus the WR’s contract could be restructured rather than traded. But why does San Francisco need so much cap space?
Brock Purdy wants a massive $266 million contract from the 49ers’ front office
Brock Purdy is a massive asset for the 49ers. But the QB’s deal is about to expire, and he will most likely receive a hefty contract extension. But Purdy’s demand is a little excessive. According to speculations, the QB is demanding a contract that gives him anything between $58 million and $68 million each year. The team is clearly not on board with this, and speculations suggest that they are willing to do it for $40 million. So contract negotiations are underway, and we don’t know whether Purdy will get that bag or not, for now.
According to reports, Purdy is unwilling to step down. The QB believes that being at the top means everything, whether it is on the field or getting money. So the QB wants to be one of the highest-paid QBs in the league. That spells trouble for the San Fran team. Dak Prescott is currently the highest-paid quarterback, earning an average yearly salary of $60 million. If the 49ers decide to break this, they will undoubtedly require all the cap room that they are attempting to create by cutting large WRs.
The report stated, “Purdy is going to look at this (the average pay of QB in last few years is estimated to be 21-25% of the salary cap) and say, ‘I need to be paid like one of the top quarterbacks in the league.’ If it’s on the low end of that, he’s going to clear guys like Trevor Lawrence. He’s not going to get to Dak Prescott’s number of $60 million per season, but he’ll be in the high 50s. If he really wants to push it to Joe Burrow who took the biggest, who took the biggest chunk of the salary cap, that’s like $68 million per year.”
But there’s a side that believed the QB may not be worth this much. Obviously, Purdy is a fantastic talent, but the 49ers should not pay him this kind of money. After all, if they do this, the team will face a big cap crisis not only this season but in the coming seasons as well.
