Things are only getting worse for the Flyers. After suffering six consecutive defeats, they lay at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division, with Stanley Cup Playoffs chances in limbo. With nothing going their way, the Flyers’ top brass decided to sack their coach, John Tortorella, ending a three-year association with him. Associate coach Brad Shaw will take over as the interim head coach, hoping for a quick turnaround. Hours after dismissing Tortorella, the Flyers’ GM, Danny Briere, made an honest revelation about ending the association with him.
Over the three seasons that he was in charge of the team, Tortorella’s record stood at 97-107-33 as he was tasked with rebuilding the Philadelphia team. However, the team has been spiraling down the tunnel and has lost 11 of the last 12 games. With the team in dire straits, Briere made the tough decision to part ways with Tortorella while thanking him for the association.
Hours after announcing the split, Briere revealed, “Today I made the very difficult decision to move on from John as our head coach. John played a vital role in our rebuild. He set a standard of play and re-established what it means to be a Philadelphia Flyer.”
Further, he went on to add, “John’s passion on the bench was only equaled by his charitable work in our community. As we move into the next chapter of this rebuild, I felt this was the best for our team to move forward. I’d like to thank John for his tireless work and commitment to the Flyers.”
Briere’s decision signals a no-nonsense approach—making it clear that mediocrity will not be tolerated, even at a financial cost.

With Shaw in charge now, he is tasked with the responsibility of overcoming the losing streak and giving something to cheer for the Flyers’ fans in their nine remaining games of this season. While Tortorella was handed the sack, he too wasn’t keen on coaching the Flyers till the end of this season, which he hinted hours before ending the association.
John Tortorella made shocking revelation hours ahead of the sack
The 66-year-old has been with the Flyers for a long time and knows the inside-out of the team. When he took over as the head coach three seasons back, the team was not in a good state and was hoping for a rebuild. While the Flyers did show some glimpses of their best, recent results put a major blow on Tortorella’s hopes of a turnaround in the team’s fortunes. Thus, even he felt that it was best to part ways with the team.
Hours before being sacked, Tortorella revealed, “I’m not really interested in learning how to coach in this type of season, where we’re at right now. But I have to do a better job. So this falls on me, getting the team prepared to play the proper way until we get to the end.”
Further, Tortorella had a year left on his contract at $4 million. With his early departure, the Flyers now face the reality of paying out a hefty sum for a coach no longer leading the team—an expensive mistake in a failing season. Although the Flyers boast a young team, mostly in their twenties, his fiery and direct approach to the game didn’t resonate well with them, which could be seen from their results of late. Thus, the team would hope for a turnaround with a change in their coaching personnel.
