Salaries for WNBA players have always been a contentious issue, revealing the vast discrepancy when it comes to pay. The male counterparts take away home that even the best female professional athletes can only dream of. As multimillion-dollar contracts await the NBA’s biggest stars, WNBA players are paid only a fraction of that amount. This, of course, forces them to play overseas, or in other leagues to supplement their salaries by playing overseas besides relying on endorsements. But who will speak about it? Yes, the voices are rising, and ‘someone’ has taken the lead.
To remind you, this divide is due to a multitude of reasons — revenue, media attention, and the perception of the average fan. But new developments surrounding the evolution of the league riding alongside the emergence of generational talents like Caitlin Clark have amplified calls for change.
Clark’s agent, Erin Kane of Excel Sports Management, has criticized the WNBA’s salaries not only for the Fever star but for all players, as insufficient.“Will Caitlin Clark ever be paid by the WNBA what she’s really worth to that league? I don’t think that’s possible,” Kane said in an interview with ESPN.
She also said “She’s part of a larger player body. They all need to be paid more. She should be recognized for what she has done and what she’s brought to the league from an economic standpoint. It’s as simple as that.”
Kane has compared Clark’s impact on women’s basketball to that of transformative players like Serena Williams and Tiger Woods in their sports. Athletes like Clark, she argues, are driving more sales, pushing the market wider, and changing how people think of women’s sports, so leagues must change their business models to adapt. But will we see the WNBA waking up to the call someday, if not today?
This is a developing story…
