3 Opponents for Alex Pereira Other Than Magomed Ankalaev Fight

4 min read

Every fighter eventually comes to the point where they must ask, “What’s next?” Well, Alex Pereira has finally hit a similar moment following his defeat at UFC 313. After an amazing run that included capturing and defending the light heavyweight title, ‘Poatan’ was outworked by Magomed Ankalaev over five rounds. It was a painful setback, but if we know anything about the Brazilian warrior, it’s that he never backs down from a fight. While a rematch against Magomed Ankalaev seems to be the biggest possibility right now, the UFC may ask him to earn himself a title contention bout instead.

Fortunately, Alex Pereira has a lot of choices for getting back in the game. Whether it’s an old adversary, a rising contender, or a fighter with unfinished business, Pereira’s next bout could propel him back into title contention. He may not have the belt right now, but his journey is far from over. So, who makes the best case for his return? Let’s have a look at three viable options.

Jiri Prochazka

Few UFC matches possess the energy that Pereira vs. Jiri Prochazka does. These two have already fought twice, with ‘Poatan’ winning both times via a second-round knockout. But if you believe this indicates ‘The Czech Samurai’ is ready to move on, think again. Following his stunning win against Jamahal Hill at UFC 311, Prochazka immediately called for a trilogy match. As expected, Pereira answered with his signature “Chama!”

A third fight would be a massive sell for the UFC. Fans enjoy excellent rivalries, and Jiri Prochazka is one of the division’s most unpredictable competitors. He’s unconventional, dangerous, and not afraid to take risks, making him the ideal partner for ‘Poatan.’ A five-round duel between these two could be an instant classic, and if Alex Pereira wins again, he will almost certainly earn a title opportunity.

Carlos Ulberg

Carlos Ulberg may not be a household name yet, but he’s quietly gaining traction in the division. His most recent victory over former champion Jan Blachowicz was the biggest of his career, and while it was not the most spectacular fight, it was enough to propel him into the contender conversation. Ulberg has now won eight of his nine UFC fights, and his striking ability makes him an exciting challenge for ‘Poatan.’

For Alex Pereira, the contest would be less about history and more about proving that he is still the most dangerous striker at 205. Ulberg is technical and swift and fights at a pace different from the aggressive brawlers the Brazilian has previously faced. It may not carry the same emotional weight as a trilogy with Prochazka, but if Alex Pereira wants to make a statement, shutting down a budding star like Ulberg would be an excellent way to do so.

Jan Blachowicz

Pereira’s career in the light heavyweight division began with a split-decision victory over Jan Blachowicz, which Blachowicz still refuses to accept. He has consistently alleged that he was robbed in that bout, even going so far as to argue that ‘Poatan’ only won because the referee favored him. Whether that’s true or not, a rematch would finally settle everything.

The fight would also be a strategic decision for Alex Pereira. Blachowicz is a tough, well-rounded fighter, but he lacks Ankalaev’s persistence when grappling. This gives him a safer opponent while still posing a serious challenge. Furthermore, if ‘Poatan’ has improved his takedown defense since their first bout, he has a good chance of dominating this time around. A convincing victory over Jan may silence critics and restore his title hopes. But what do you think? Who, according to you, is the best opponent for Alex Pereira? Let us know in the comments.
