Picture a Texas-sized wrecking machine—part Roy Williams, part Jordan Shipley—just bulldozing through college defenses. Now, imagine that force joining hands with Jerry Jones’s Cowboys. That’s the buzz around the Longhorns’ receiver who racked up 2,005 yards, and now Dallas is interested after he impressed in Tampa Bay. If Jerry Jones makes the call, this guy could be CeeDee Lamb’s electric sidekick and a real offensive weapon for the Cowboys, a nightmare for other teams. The cool part? This 5’11″, 191-pound powerhouse from Texas seems to be into the Cowboys, too.
And that freak of an athlete is none other than Longhorns star WR Matthew Golden, whose stats speak for themselves. Last season with Texas, he snagged 58 catches for 987 yards and nine touchdowns. But what really made people look was his blazing 4.29-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, seriously boosting his draft stock. Now, here’s the deal: CeeDee Lamb is the only real proven receiver the Cowboys have got, and while a guy like Tetairoa McMillan could also get picked, Golden’s recent visit might have totally changed their thinking. He could be a serious game-changer for them, adding some much-needed depth.
Matthew Golden seemed pretty impressed with Jerry Jones’s team and his undeniable charm after that visit. Talking about it on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams podcast, he said, “I mean that’s Jerry Jones, you know—he’s kind of legendary, you know what I’m saying? So, great guy. You know, I had the opportunity to meet him. But you know, just being there, being able to meet Jerry, you know, it was—it was cool. It was a cool moment for me.” Landing in Dallas would keep Golden close to home, and his crazy talent would definitely add some punch to their offense. What makes this even more interesting are the family vibes….
During their meeting, Jerry Jones even told Matthew Golden to call his mom and chatted with her himself. “He told me to call my mom. So I ended up calling her and FaceTimed her. I was like, I’ve got a surprise for you, and Coach Jerry was talking to her,” Golden shared. “He was just talking to her, telling her she raised a great young man. All the hard work paid off, and she did a tremendous job with me.” If that doesn’t sound like a done deal, what does?
But even though Tampa Bay brought back Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, they still hosted Matthew Golden for one of their top prospect visits. He even posted an Instagram story of himself hanging out with Evans and Godwin, their two star receivers. And their coach, Todd Bowles, made it clear they’re not sleeping on talent, saying, “Never bypass a very good offensive player,” even if they need defense. “I would like to have some defensive players if that presented itself, but by no means will I bypass a very good offensive player just to satisfy my needs on defense.”
Bowles even added, “We can figure out how to keep the score down, but you can’t figure out a way to keep scoring points, especially if your horses go down. You can never have enough horses on offense.” If that’s how they see it, Matthew Golden could even go as high as the 19th pick to the Bucs. But with some injury worries, will teams risk picking him?
Jerry Jones’s future offensive weapon is in trouble?
We all saw Matthew Golden limp off the field at the Texas Cotton Bowl with a left ankle issue. But even with that, he came back in the second half and made a difference, grabbing a 27-yard pass to get Texas close to the end zone. Now the big question is: is that ankle fully healed, or is it still slowing Golden down?
The NFL Combine definitely showed Matthew Golden can fly; he clocked a crazy 4.29-second 40-yard dash. That puts him right up there with the fastest guys at his position. But Golden wants to be the best, and if his ankle wasn’t bothering him, he thinks he could have run a 4.1. Wild, right? He still thinks the same….
“I think I could have,” Golden told Adams when she asked if he could have run faster.
“I couldn’t tell you (what time I would have run), I wanted to go 4.1. My ankle was still bothering me, then I knew once I ran, my agent told me to take my cleats off.” And get this: Golden even hinted he might have broken Xavier Worthy’s NFL combine record from last year, which was 4.21 secs.
“I’m a competitor; I’m not gonna say I can beat him, and I’m not gonna say I can’t, but whenever we line up, we are just gonna see who wins.” Matthew Golden is a fighter, and if Jerry Jones snags him, the Cowboys’ offense is about to get seriously exciting. With the draft just around the corner, will Dallas be where Golden lands?
